fn’t answer. I start walking, leaving the castle behind as I hold the coat tightly around my body.
Hours pass, and I eventually make my way deep into the heart of the forest.
“Our pup is ready to be born, sweetheart. Be strong and bring her into the world.”
I have moved away from the castle, the kingdom, everyone. Ever since I arrived here a week ago, all I have needed is silence peace, and a place where I can hear my own thoughts. The first drops of a light drizzle begin to fall onto the leaves.
“I know, but don’t talk to Zack. I want to do this alone.”
“He’ll go crazy, just like Bastian.”
“If you don’t tell him, they won’t.”
Astra doesn’t seem very happy with my decision, but she remains silent.
I lean against the thick trunk of an old oak and remove my underwear. I will have my baby here, alone, with no one holding my hand and no one telling me comforting words.
My mother gave birth to me in the forest on her way to my grandmother’s cabin, although she never made it there. I want to do the same. I want to bring my little girl into the world surrounded by nature, peace, and calm.
The contractions come hard, and my body begins to work on instinct. I count the seconds between each one as I press one hand against the tree trunk. The pain intensifies, but I also feel something different: a deep certainty that my baby is ready to be born and that both of us know exactly what to do.
The rain continues for a while, but shortly afterward, the sky begins to clear. The clouds slowly part, and the moonlight filters through the branches once again.
I stifle my cries of pain, afraid someone might hear them from the kingdom.
The burning sensation I feel when my baby’s little head begins to emerge forces me to bend over myself. I grit my teeth and breathe as best I can. Johan’s coat is the only thing I have to cover myself, and I don’t care.
I kneel on the damp earth and push one more time.
Then, finally, I have her in my hands. It’s a girl.
My little girl.
I hold her against my chest, and for a few seconds, everything else disappears. The forest, the rain, the castle, Bastian. Johan… nothing matters.
There is only her.
“I suspected you were going to have your baby. What I didn’t imagine was that you would have her alone in the middle of the forest.”
I ignore Johan’s voice. My entire world is focused on the tiny body trembling in my arms.
“Hello, my little girl. I’m your mommy.”
Her cries fill the forest, and I feel something inside me break and take shape again at the same time.
Johan approaches and crouches beside me.

“Push one more time, sweetheart.”
bey.The final effort leaves me completely exhausted, and I end up sitting on the wet ground. I wrap my daughter in the co and hold her against my chest as I try to catch my breath.
“Congratulations. She’s beautiful. Just like you.”
Johan helps me to my feet and, with his free hand, opens a portal that appears in front of us.
“Why are you here? How did you know?”
“You blocked the bond with Bastian, but not with me. I guess you forgot about me, and that’s how I was able to find your
I don’t answer.
One step later, I am back in my room. It’s empty and completely dark.
Johan looks at my daughter and then at me.
“I’ll go get him. I suppose he’ll want to meet his daughter.”
I look at him just as he heads toward the door.
“Thank you for coming for us.”
He stops for a moment and turns his head.
“You’re welcome.”
Having a baby hurts like hell, but when I look at her little face, her sparse white hair, and her tiny clenched hands, all that pajn turns into love.
Because I have loved her from the moment I found out she was growing inside me.
I pull my daughter closer to my chest and kiss her tiny forehead.
“Oana Thorn. Welcome to the world.”
Sonia is the first to enter the room and locks the door behind her before the others can arrive. She is carrying several bags. but drops them at her feet the moment she sees me sitting on the bed with my daughter in my arms as I feed her.
“My love, look at you.” She smiles as she slowly approaches. “You two look perfect.”
I’m no longer wearing the dress covered in mud. I took it off as soon as Johan left, and now I’m wearing nothing but Bastian’s black bathrobe, which is far too big for me. Oana is wrapped in a clean sheet and covered with a warin blanket. completely unaware of the chaos her arrival into the world has caused.
“Hello, Grandma. She’s perfect.”
Sonia kneels in front of me and caresses my cheek with the palm of her hand. Her eyes move over my face, looking for any sign that something might be wrong.
“You’re crazy, you know that? We’ve searched the entire kingdom for you. Bastian thought you had disappeared again. How are you? How do you feel?”
I simply smile at her. I lower my gaze toward Oana and watch her tiny face as she rests peacefully against my body.
“I wanted to have my daughter alone in the forest. It was beautiful. Just her and me.”
