The celebration dinner for Oana’s birth comes to an end and, little by little, the guests begin to rise from their seats. The conversations become more scattered as the servants enter the dining hall to remove the glasses, plates, and nearly empty serving dishes. Celine stands with her daughter in her arms and prepares to leave, but Bastian extends his hand and gently takes hers before she can take a step.

“If you don’t let go, I’ll break every bone in your hand.”

This time, he does not speak quietly. The hardness in his voice cuts through the dining hall and causes several of the servants who have just entered to freeze, their hands suspended over the table. Even some of the conversations die down completely. Celine does not take her eyes off Bastian and, without raising her voice, adds:

“And pick a room to sleep in tonight, because I don’t want to see you.”

She frees herself from his grip with a firm movement and adjusts the baby in her arms, making sure the pink blanket properly covers her tiny body. Bastian does not try to stop her this time. He remains seated, watching her walk away with a dark expression, but he does not say a single word.

“I told you, and you didn’t listen to me. As always.”

Bastian remains seated for a few more seconds, his gaze fixed on the place where Celine has just disappeared. Then he extends his arm, takes the bottle of wine, and fills his glass again with a calmness that does not match the tension still present in his body.

Magnus sits across from him, crosses his arms over his chest, and raises an eyebrow.

Bastian does not even look at him.

“I’m not in the mood for one of your speeches where you’re always right and I’m an idiot.”

Magnus keeps his eyes on his son for a few seconds, allowing the silence to do its work. Then he looks at the glass Bastian is holding between his fingers and looks back at his face.

He does not look impressed.

“I never said you were an idiot.”

Bastian finally raises his eyes toward him.

“You think it.”

“Sometimes.”

“And tonight you’re trying pretty hard to prove me right.” His father, the king, tilts his head slightly, drawing a mocking smile across his lips.

That makes Bastian’s mood even worse, but the prince believes he did the right thing, so he does not care about the mockery on his father’s lips.

Magnus settles in front of his son and crosses his arms over his chest, watching him for a few seconds.

“I warned you, and you didn’t listen to me. Now drink your wine and learn.”

Bastian slowly raises his eyes toward him.

“Are you finished?”

“I haven’t even started, son. Did you think I was the only one who noticed that something is wrong between you and my dear daughter? She may not have my blood, but I adore her as if she did. She is your future wife, the future queen of all of this, and you… you’re an idiot.”

“Ah, finally. You say it and prove me right.”

Before Magnus can answer, a deep voice comes from the entrance to the dining hall.

“What did I miss?”

Bastian closes his eyes for a moment.

He does not need to turn around to know who has just arrived.

Silas enters with a bottle of whiskey in one hand and three glasses in the other. The amber liquid moves slowly inside the glass as he walks toward them with an insulting calmness. He sits beside his son, Magnus, pours a generous measure for all three, and looks at his grandson over the rim of his glass.

“By the look on your face, I’d say Celine finally found out you kicked her second mate out of the castle.” He sets the glass on the table and crosses his arms, just as his son did, also raising an eyebrow. “Bravo, genius.”

Magnus bursts out laughing.

Bastian sets his empty wine glass down on the table with a sharp thud and takes the glass his grandfather poured for him.

“Seriously?”

“What?” Silas also tilts his head and smiles at his grandson. “You can’t get mad at me. I’m your grandfather, and I have a hundred-year-old bottle of whiskey to endure your problems.”

Magnus shakes his head, amused.

“I told him exactly the same thing.”

Silas tastes the whiskey and nods with satisfaction, letting the liquor rest on his palate for a few seconds before setting the glass on the table.

“Then today is a good day. My grandson is finally facing the consequences of his decisions.”

Bastian looks at both of them with an expression that promises murder. His jaw tightens and his fingers close

around the glass, but neither of them seems impressed. Magnus, in fact, seems to be enjoying the situation far too much.

“Don’t look at us like that,” he says, raising his glass. “We warned you.”
