The Second Chance Of The Rejected Moon (Celine and Bastian) novel Chapter 29

Chapter 29

And honestly… seeing him so focused on something as simple as making sure I eat properly feels strange.

Strangely warm.

“Thank you, but I…”

“I know you can take them yourself.” He interrupts me while placing the capsule on my hand. “But I want to do it myself. Now eat before it gets cold.”

King Magnus ends up slowly resting an elbow on the table while watching his son as if he were witnessing a paranormal phenomenon.

And honestly, a territorial Lycan prince acting like an obsessive nurse probably does count as one.

I take the pill and Bastian starts updating everyone about my health while I slowly taste the warm food.

Dinner ends without much preamble. We say goodbye to go rest, well… more accurately, I say goodbye, because Bastian takes my hand and, without saying a single word, gets up to practically drag me out of the dining room.

Not even King Magnus tries to stop us. In fact, when I look back before leaving, I find Alaric watching us with a barely visible smile while the king slowly shakes his head, as if he were already too used to his son doing exactly whatever he wants.

The doors close behind us and the sound of the conversations gradually disappears until only the echo of our footsteps crossing the castle’s long hallways remains.

As we walk in silence, I notice that this time the path is different.

The second floor is much darker, poorer in decoration, and clearly colder. The enormous windows allow the bluish moonlight inside while the wind softly strikes the glass, making the shadows dance across the black stone walls. There are no flowers, expensive paintings, or golden lamps here like in the castle’s main areas.

Everything feels more austere, quieter, and strangely intimidating.

Bastian keeps walking without saying anything and, just like last night, the same sensation slowly wraps around me again. That heavy, heated tension that always seems to surround him, as if something inside him were constantly fighting.

The sound of his boots echoes against the stone floor while we cross a much narrower hallway than the others and I cannot help glancing at him from the corner of my eye.

His expression hardened again, his broad shoulders look tense beneath the black clothing, and his completely dark eyes. remain fixed ahead. It is as if the entire castle changes together with him, as if this part belonged only to the monster everyone fears and even so, his hand never lets go of mine.

I am not afraid.

At moments I feel his gaze fixed on me, but when I lift my eyes he is not looking at me. He stares ahead and even so I feel something slowly changing in the atmosphere. His scent intensifies and there is something different mixing with the mint, cedar, and leather, something heavier, warmer, and strangely unsettling. I do not know how to explain it. It is… too much. As if the air inside the hallway had suddenly become thicker.

My wolf shifts softly inside me, restless, and my body starts feeling strange. A peculiar warmth slowly rises through my chest and ends up spreading through the rest of my body without me understanding why. I swallow nervously and tighten my grip on his hand a little more, searching for stability, but that only seems to make everything worse.

Bastian suddenly stops.

With a deeply furrowed frown, he lets go of my hand and steps back once

Then another step.

“Céline, stop.”

His voice comes out deeper than normal and that only manages to confuse me even more. The loss of his touch leaves an uncomfortable sensation in my chest, as if something were wrong and I did not know exactly what it was.

“Did I do something wrong?” My eyes search for his, but he immediately looks away and runs a hand through his dark hair before walking again, this time much faster than before.

I hurry to keep up with him while trying to understand what just happened. Because only a few seconds ago he was calm and now he seems upset, tense… almost desperate to put distance between us.

After turning right, I see the same group of guards who were outside the room last night. All of them immediately straighten when they see us approaching and lower their heads respectfully. Bastian opens the heavy black doors and steps aside to let me enter the chamber first, which today looks much brighter than the previous night. The wall lamps are lit and the fireplace crackles softly, filling the room with a pleasant warmth that contrasts with the cold of the hallways.

I smile while looking around the room and I am about to comment on the change when I flinch at the sharp sound of the door closing behind me.

I turn around quickly.

He is gone.

I frown in confusion while silence fills the enormous room once again. I slowly shake my head without understanding what happened for him to react that way with me.

I mentally go over the last few hours together, trying to find something out of place, some wrong word or something I could have done badly, but I find nothing. He stayed with me the entire time while we were at the hospital, made sure to support me and make me feel safe. He brought me back, we shared a warm moment talking about the court ladies and then, during dinner, he updated Alaric and the king about my health and the treatment I will begin in a few days with Doctor Margot.
