Chapter 28
Some seem offended. Others surprised.
And a few are clearly annoyed because I rejected them in front of everyone.

When I look away and return beside Bastian and Jared, who stayed silent the entire time as if trying to become invisible. I take my mate’s hand again to continue our way deeper into the castle.
Bastian lets out a low laugh.
The sound makes me immediately turn toward him.
“What are you laughing at?” I ask, afraid I might have done something wrong.
“At the fact that you are intelligent and very much like me, Celine.” His dark eyes shine with amusement/while we continue walking through the long illuminated hallway. “You openly dismissed that nest of tarantulas and threw them out of the castle with a lot of confidence and authority. I think you just earned yourself a good number of enemies, because all of them wanted to get close to gain benefits and you denied them. Good girl.”
I had not thought about it that way.
But honestly, I do not care.
The only person I want near me is Aymara. She is the only she-wolf, besides Margot, who truly inspires trust in me and that. coming from someone like me, already means a lot.
“I do not want them near me. Is it necessary to be around them?”
We turn down the hallway that I recognize as the path toward the great hall and every servant we pass immediately bows in
reverence.
“Unfortunately, yes.” Bastian replies. “They will be the ones assisting you with kingdom matters and your duties. They are also the ones who will plan our mating ceremony.”
And judging by the way he sighs after saying it, he does not seem too happy about the idea either.
“Does that mean I will never be able to get rid of them?” I deflate like a balloon while we continue moving through the enormous illuminated hallway.
“You have a lot to do now, so your time with them will be limited.” Bastian answers calmly. “The she-wolf who spoke for all of them is the mother of the brat I taught a lesson to yesterday. She is angry and, no matter how much she tried to smile. her scent gave her away.”
That does not surprise me too much.
That fake smile had already reminded me too much of Anne and Beatriz from the very first moment.
“Celine, I will be with you at all times, do not worry.” Jared says while stepping ahead to open the enormous double doors for us. “Those she-wolves will not do anything while someone else is present.”
“You do not have much time to spend with Celine either.” My mate scolds him while we cross into the next hall. “I made it clear to you this morning. If you want to be my luna’s personal guard, you need to train and learn protocol. Besides, those she-wolves are not stupid. They will not mistreat Celine or hurt her either.”
“Because they know you are going to kill them?” I joke.
“No.” Bastian looks at me from the corner of his eye and a small smile appears on his face. “Because now they know you are

just as cold and dangerous as I am.”
“I am not dangerous.” I whisper.

We cross the hall and Bastian guides us toward the place where a delicious aroma is coming from, one that immediately makes my stomach growl. The sound makes Jared laugh quietly and Bastian’s expression soften a little.
“Celine, you are, even if you are too good for your own sake. My wolf and your wolf have the same temperament, otherwise the Moon Goddess would never have destined us to be together. Your nature is sweet, human, and empathetic because. despite everything you have lived through, you still keep faith in yourself and in the fact that not everyone is like your family.”
His voice loses some of its usual harshness while he speaks and that makes me look back at him.
“But you are also territorial, proud, and much stronger than you think.” He continues while we walk down wide stairs covered in dark carpets. “It is just that no one ever gave you the opportunity to prove it before.”
His words leave me silent for several seconds.
I had never thought about myself that way.
I was always the ignored daughter, the servant, the weak wolf, the shame of the Miller family. No one had ever spoken to me as if there were truly something valuable inside me.
Bastian opens one of the private dining room doors and the warmth along with the smell of freshly made food hits my face immediately.
“And stop underestimating yourself.” He adds before letting me enter first. “Honestly, you are already pretty scary when you decide to make that serious face.”
Jared laughs loudly this time and even I end up letting out a small laugh.
Because coming from the man who almost ripped someone’s head off in front of the entire court… that definitely sounds ridiculous.
The king is standing beside the large fireplace with his hands behind his back when he sees us enter. The fire partially illuminates his face and makes the golden details of his dark suit shine. He lets out a long sigh while observing us and finally relaxes a little when he sees me standing and apparently calm. Alaric also appears through a side door, this time without Aymara, adjusting the sleeves of his shirt while walking toward the table.
