Chapter 35

Bastian runs a hand over his face as if trying to control himself and lets out a heavy exhale before looking at me again.
“You look good. Too good.” He finally admits while Zack practically stirs behind his eyes with that golden gleam. “And believe me when I tell you that my wolf has spent the entire morning trying to behave like a civilized being while you walk around the room half naked and now wearing those damned leggings.”
My eyes widen a little more and I feel my heart pounding hard inside my chest.
Because the way he is looking at me right now… definitely does not look like annoyance.
When we leave the bedroom, we walk side by side in silence and, when we turn right into the side corridor to go down the stairs, I stop dead in my tracks.
Bastian barely takes one more step before noticing that I am no longer moving with him. He slightly furrows his brow and turns his face toward me.
“What is it?”
I wrinkle my nose immediately and feel my bad mood returning once again.
“Can’t you smell it?” I complain, crossing my arms. “From here I can smell the disgusting perfume of the court ladies.”
My mate inhales deeply and after a few seconds shakes his head while an amused smile slowly appears on his lips.
“I don’t smell anything.” He replies, moving a little closer to me. “If you can do it from here, then let me tell you that you haye an absurdly developed sense of smell.”
I rub my cheeks in frustration and let out a long sigh. Those witches have already managed to ruin my morning without even appearing in front of me yet, and the worst part is that they clearly understood nothing of what I told them last night.
Wasn’t I supposed to have been clear enough when I asked them not to come near me?
We start walking again and this time Bastian takes my hand when he notices my irritation. His warm fingers intertwine with mine while we slowly descend the stairs.
“You know?” I mutter, still annoyed. “I’m starting to think those women simply do whatever they want.”
“Welcome to nobility.” He replies with a low laugh. “They are Alpha and Beta she-wolves raised within powerful families. They are used to ignoring everything they do not like hearing.”
“Then I’m going to have to start speaking louder. Isn’t my will supposed to be above their hierarchies?”
Bastian’s smile widens a little more and, from the way his dark eyes watch me for a moment, I have the horrible suspicion that my mate is enjoying seeing me annoyed with other women because of him far too much.
Vain.
“If you stop to think about it a little, you can drag those she-wolves into doing things that you would do and they would not.” Bastian continues walking with me while we go down the stairs and the calm tone of his voice makes it clear that he is enjoying this conversation far too much. “For example, tasks that they would normally give to others. They are nobles, Celine. You can send them to the south of the kingdom, to the border limits where there are more needs than you can imagine. Alaric usually visits them, but they are quite hostile toward anyone related to the court. I wanted to take you

personally so you could meet them because I thought a female presence might calm them a little, but… The smile on his lips widens. “If you want to annoy those she-wolves so they do not come back, you can visit them yourself and take the ladies with you. Learn to play with discomforts,”
A luge smile appears on my face just as we reach the last step and, as my sense of smell had already warned me from above, I find the ladies’ court settled in the main hall drinking coffee as if they belonged here.
Witches.
“Darling, go ahead. I’ll be there in a moment.”
I hope I did not go too far with that term of endearment. I had used it before in front of others.
Bastian does not even spare them a glance while he keeps walking and several of the she-wolves immediately turn their heads to watch him walk away. My eyes narrow automatically.

It is a blessing that my wolf still cannot take complete control because I am fairly sure she would have already tried to rip
out more than one throat.
I walk directly toward them and stop in front of the same blonde from last night. The woman maintains that fake and elegant smile that reminds me far too much of Beatriz.
I hate her immediately.
“Wasn’t I clear yesterday that I did not want you here?”
I do not even try to sound polite. I do not greet them, bow, or smile, and neither does she. She simply stands in front of me with her hands clasped in front of her dress as if she were talking to a difficult child.
Goddess. I hate seeing Beatriz reflected in this woman even more.
“And we said that we are here to serve you and help you with everything you need. The ladies’ court has an important function, Celine.”
My blood boils.
Celine?
The damned woman just skipped protocol in front of everyone.
“Luna Celine.” I correct her slowly.
The blonde’s smile does not disappear. On the contrary, she slightly tilts her head while her blue eyes shine with challenge.
“You are not our Luna yet. The mating ceremony has not taken place and you do not bear our prince’s mark either.”
The rage I feel when I hear her say that is so intense that for a second Lperfectly understand Zack when he wants to tear people apart.
If I were not a weak she-wolf, I probably would have already tried to kick them out of the castle myself.
But then I remember Bastian’s words.
Learn to play.
So I smile.
And that seems to make them much more nervous.
