Chapter 77
Bastian releases me and takes a step back, looking me up and down with a deeply furrowed brow. His golden eyes travel across my face with an intensity that makes me blink.
“Your eyes, your skin, and your hair have changed, Celine. That sword changed you when you grabbed it” His yoice is low and, for the first time since I’ve known him, I think I’m seeing Prince Thorn, the future king who fears nothing, truly frightened. “Are you alright? How do you feel?”
I lift the sword without the slightest effort and move it purely on instinct, immediately remembering how to do so, as though my muscles retained a memory my mind does not know. The weight practically doesn’t exist in my hands. The blade cuts through the air with a soft whistle, and Bastian turns pale when he sees me. My eyes had changed color before, and I never gave it much importance. And now, honestly, neither do I.
“This sword… can I keep it?” I give him one of those looks that used to be useless with my father whenever I asked for something I knew perfectly well he would refuse. “I’m fine, I swear. She… chose me. Please.”
“You can keep it, but you… do you really not feel any changes? I’m scared as hell. You look like another Celine, and it feels unreal seeing you hold it as though it’s nothing.”
“I don’t feel anything. I feel as good as ever, and it feels light in my hands.”
I understand it. It can be a little unsettling that I, a weak she-wolf, wield a sword that heavy as though it were nothing.
I stop playing with the sword and walk over to him. Standing on tiptoe, I kiss his lips, but even then I can feel the tension in his body. His shoulders remain stiff, and his hands take a second to wrap around my waist, as though he’s still trying to convince himself that I really am me.
“Stop worrying.”
“You’re saying that because you haven’t seen yourself in a mirror yet.” His voice still sounds deep and strangely low, carrying a concern I have never heard from him before. Even his wolf seems agitated. It’s as though he were looking at a stranger and desperately trying to find his mate behind those changes.
“I’m still the same Celine as always, your mate and the woman who fell in love with you. Can I take her to our room? I want to clean her later.”
Bastian extends his hand for me to give him the sword, and I refuse after remembering the effort he had to make to take it down from its stand on the wall and then hold it. I saw the veins bulging in his arms and the sweat covering his forehead, while the weapon is no burden to me.
It is undoubtedly a special sword, because Astra is just as happy as I am to have it. I can feel her excitement dancing inside me, a childish joy mixed with a strange sense of pride. And what for Bastian was an impossible sword to wield feels as light as any other to me.
Erebus rests between my fingers with a disturbing ease, as though it had been forged exclusively for my hands.
As though it had been waiting.
Waiting for me.
And while I absentmindedly caress the ancient engravings on the blade, I could swear that faint whisper slips through my mind once again.
Soft and satisfied, as though, after centuries of silence, an old friend had finally come home.
“Let’s go take a shower. Your uncle should be arriving at any moment, and you need to eat.”
The Second Chance Of The Rejected Moon
I smile at him while taking his hand so we can leave the training room together My new sword rests on my shoulder as we
walk
Yon-know, this sword isn’t very heavy in my hands. I’d like to find out who its previous owner was and where it came from Is there some kind of weapon registry?”
Bastian remains just as tense as before and nods. The echo of our footsteps is the only sound in the wide empty hallway, while the tip of Erebus barely brushes the air beside me. Despite its size, holding it feels as natural as carrying a feather
“I suppose so. We’ll look together. And I’ll also investigate changes in werewolves. You really do look very different.
“Are my eyes blue again?”
“A beautiful and terrifying blue.”
I let out a small laugh. I remember when Doctor Lucien Valcrest and his wife worried about that “anomaly in my blood, and
I think that same anomaly is what has changed me, but Erebus… she was the one who changed me.
“You’re worried about my blood, aren’t you? Is that why my uncle is here?” I ask after putting the pieces together.
Bastian stops when we’re about to climb the staircase leading to our bedchamber. His fingers gently tighten around mine and his expression hardens.
“Yes. And later we’ll return to the hospital so Lucien can examine you.”
I roll my eyes and shake my head.
‘I don’t want them looking at me like some kind of freak. For now, I want us to take a shower and go eat with my uncle. Alright? Later we’ll investigate Erebus.”
“Yes. And we’ll also look into unknown races among werewolves. You, without a doubt, are one of them.”
We continue upstairs and run into Thomas, who had been walking in our direction. His steps come to an abrupt stop when he sees me, and his eyes widen slightly, traveling up and down my body in utter astonishment.
“Celine?”
“Good morning. Thomas.” I smile when I notice his attention settling on the sword I’m carrying in my hands.
“You look…”
He doesn’t finish the sentence because Bastian releases my hand and steps in front of him.
“Were you looking for me?”
Thomas shakes his head.
“No. I was looking for Celine.”
“I’m sure you mean Luna Celine. Right?” my mate corrects him, pinning my new head of security with his golden eyes.
Thomas smiles lazily.
“That’s right, my apologies.”
Then his gray eyes, as cold as the steel of my sword, settle on me again.
“The Ladies’ Court has been waiting for you in the hall for an hour.”
