Chapter 79
Without giving me time to react, Bastian drags me into the shower and begins spreading shampoo through my hair as hot water pours down over us.
“What are you doing?” I still can’t believe what I just saw with my own eyes. “Stop. I can do it myself.”
“There’s no time to waste, we have to go… we have…”
His voice breaks, and for a second he simply seems upset.
But no.
He’s terrified.
I can see it in his eyes, in the tension of his jaw, and in the way his hands tremble slightly as he tries to remain calm./
“We’re going to see my grandfather.”
“Grandfather?” I raise my hands to hold his. I’m worried about my physical changes too, but I feel fine. Even a little stronger than I’ve ever felt before. “Calm down, love.”
I can feel that Bastian is on the verge of panicking.
“I can’t calm down, Celine! Can’t you see that not only is your body changing, but now you’re covered in tattoos with thousands of symbols? How the hell am I supposed to stay calm?”
he replies while continuing the task of washing me with almost absurd speed. I take a breath and close my eyes.
“It’s Erebus.” My voice softens in the hope of reassuring him. “When I took her in my hands, I felt her power climb up my arm until it stopped between my shoulder blades. She showed me things.”
“What things?”
We step out of the shower, and he wraps me in a towel so large it could go around me several times.
“An angel. He had two swords identical to mine. He was a warrior, and he seemed furious. I’ve seen countless battlefields, fallen kingdoms, vampires and humans drowning in a river of blood.”
‘I don’t want you touching that thing again.”
“The sword spoke to me. She chose me.”
“No!” His answer echoes through the bathroom. “The sword manipulated you, Celine. A witch will examine it, and if necessary, I’ll destroy it. I don’t want it hurting you.”
“You can’t do that, it’s mine.” I speak calmly again while stroking his wet arms. “Stop being paranoid. I’ve changed, I can see that, but if she chose me, it’s because she wants me to be the one who uses her to defend us against whatever is coming.”
Bastian goes still for several seconds.
Then I hug him, resting my head against his chest, which still carries traces of soap and the warmth of the shower.
“Please, you scare me when you get like this.”
His arms tighten around me, too tightly even, as though he fears I might disappear from them at any moment and holding on to me is the only way to make sure I’m still there.
The Second Chance Of The Rejected Moon
“Alright. I promise I won’t get this worked up again, but I’m scared as hell. What if that thing consumes you and I lose you? I can’t lose you, my love. Our life together has barely begun.
“And I intend to live it by your side. Now come on.” I encourage him to leave the bathroom so we can get dressed.
“We’re going to the northern forests. If there’s anyone who might know what’s happening to you, it’s my grandfather”
“You never told me you had another grandfather.”
I put on a pair of black leather pants fitted to my legs, a shirt of the same color adorned with silver threads at the collar and cuffs, and a pair of long low-heeled boots. I brush my hair while watching Bastian dress in clothes similar to mine.
He always wears black.
“My grandfather is an unbearable old man. A barbarian, just like every Thorn before him. Right now my father is with Jated in his lands training.”
My eyes widen once more in surprise.
Jared and your father are in your grandfather’s lands? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I told you that Jared and my father had gone into the forest to train. Maybe I forgot to mention Silas Thorn and the location of the little cave where he decided to hide. He doesn’t get along with anyone. He’s… a difficult wolf to deal with.”
“We’ll go after lunch.” I give in to his proposal.
Bastian nods and runs his fingers through his hair in an attempt to comb it. A minute later, we leave the bedchamber and head downstairs toward the dining room.
My hunger vanished completely when I saw the tattoos and the strange symbol engraved between my shoulder blades. But my uncle is waiting for us, and after that, we’ll have to go meet Bastian’s grandfather.
And, for some reason I can’t explain, a part of me has the strange feeling that Silas already knows Erebus perfectly well.
“Let’s have lunch, just relax. Alright?”
Bastian nods silently, and we head down to the dining room, where I find my uncle standing beside the fireplace. The flames partially illuminate his face, and the moment he sees me, his eyes widen in surprise. He quickly approaches me, but I immediately take a step back and raise my hands to stop him before he can even hug me.
“What the hell happened to you?”
I’m fine, don’t worry.”
Bastian invites him to take a seat at the table, pulls out a chair for me, and the servants serve our meal in complete silence, although I notice several curious glances directed toward my hair and eyes. The atmosphere is strangely tense, as though everyone can sense that something isn’t right.
“Did you get the tests done?” Bastian asks without wasting any time. “Did you see the geneticist?”
I had no idea Christian was going to consult a geneticist.
“Yes, and my blood is as normal as yours. Celine’s is the only strange one, the one they now call ‘Moon Blood.”” Christian looks at me again with concern, studying my face so closely that it makes me slightly uncomfortable.
Your eyes are blue now, and your hair looks almost white.” His expression darkens even further. “How do you feel?”
