The Seduction of Jac Frost (by Tatienne Richard) novel Chapter 1

< The Seduction of Jac Frost

Jacqueline Frost was not in the mood for the barista’s antics. The urge to walk away without her coffee was barely outweighed by her desire for caffeine. She’d ordered the coffee through the store’s online application, and the damn app had shortened her name to Jac Frost.

Let the hilarity ensue, at least according to the barista.

She was twentyfive years old. She’d been hearing the jokes about her name since she was dropped off at St. Bart’s Hospital in a basket only a few hours old along with a note which said her name was Jacqueline Frost and that her mother couldn’t keep her. It also hadn’t helped she was blue. Her entire body was blue. At first the nurses at the hospital were convinced she was oxygen deprived. Then they thought maybe someone dunked her in blue dye. Nope. She was simply blue. Eventually it disappeared and by the time she was two she looked like a normal kid except for when she was angry because when she was angry, she turned blue. The doctor’s hypothesized it was an oxygen deficiency because she was holding her breath while in a

rage.

It wasn’t the cool blue like the girl from the XMen movies. 11:45

Nope. She turned the bright color of the sky on a sunny day, which contradicted the emotions she was feeling.

All it did was make it so kids wouldn’t want to play with her and no family want to adopt her. Parents didn’t want a kid with a health condition nobody could identify. Heaven only knew how expensive that would be.

Instead she grew up in foster care, the butt of jokes from parents and kids alike. There was one kid in one of her foster homes who thought since her blue tint came on when she was furious, it was apt to call her Stitch. Another kid in middle school thought it funny to call her Smurfette on the one day she wore a white hat to school and happened to get angry when one of the older kids had tripped her and she’d skinned her knees.

However, with her name and the color, the name Jac Frost was the one she’d heard nearly every other day from the day she first understood the shit people spoke without concern for her feelings.

Now, standing in front of the counter wanting nothing more than to pick up her coffee and get to the office, the fucking barista was grinning at her and laughing like she’d done the funniest thing ever by drawing all over her cup. Snowflakes and some cartoon face of what Jacqueline surmised was supposed to be a depiction of the mythological being Jack Frost blowing the snowflakes around the cup, were likely meant to entertain or impress. Instead it was irritating and her hands were ning]:45

blue.

Thanks.

See what I did there?the barista nodded excitedly.

Yup. Can I have my cup?she waved to the woman who was pointing vigorously at all her designs. When the girl ignored her, she inhaled sharply and tried to calm herself. All the psychobabble in the world hadn’t helped her keep her temper under control in a quarter century and yet here she was deep breathing like she’d run a marathon over a fucking coffee cup.

Lady!she snapped finally. I have to get to work. I appreciate the artistic abilities you possess to draw a cartoon of Jack Frost on my cup but I’m going to be late. Can I please have it?

Oh, sorry. The girl blinked and passed her the cup and then was shocked when Jacqueline ripped the top off the cup and dumped her drink into the reusable thermos she carried with her and then left the decorated cup on the counter and walked

out.

Jacqueline felt the heavy weight of stares of other customers and decided this would be the last time she was able to come this coffee shop. She looked down at her hand clutching her mug and noted the hue to her skin was not fading. She needed to get that shit under control before she got to the office. It was bad enough she was supposed to be doing her very first presentatiforthe5

CEO this morning, but going in cranky was going to be a problem.

Her boss, Wilder Vaughn, ran the biggest professional management company in all of North America. With clients signed from popstars to sports athletes, supermodels to actors, there was no shortage of work for her to perform as one of the consultants from the crisis management team.

This week one of the athletes they managed, a highprofile skier set for the Olympics, had been busted at a frat party in a hot tub naked with three equally naked girls. The problem, surprisingly, wasn’t the ménageàquatre this guy decided to have on college grounds. Nope. The problem was one of the girls was barely sixteen, brought to the party by one of her older collegeaged sisters, and was the one sitting on the man’s lap when he was caught.

The skier, Wraith Fairchild, swore that he didn’t know she was so young. She’d come in with identification her sister had made for her. All IDs were checked at the door and nobody under nineteen was allowed into the party. The tabloids didn’t seem to care though and for the last thirtysix hours he was being dragged through the mud for underage drinking and sex parties

with minors.

Yesterday they were tasked with coming up with a plan to fix his image so he wouldn’t get kicked off the Olympic team. Her boss had given it to her to come up with something to pres to the 45

CEO this morning because her boss, Percival, was dealing with another blowup involving an Oscarwinning actor who was filmed screwing his nanny on the kitchen counter while his baby was in the baby bouncy chair only a few feet away. She was convinced famous people traded their morals and ethics for publicity, but she didn’t care. Their screwups were money in

her bank account.

However, for the first time in her career, she was going to meet the CEO and she already bloody terrified. Looking down at her blue fingers wrapped around her coffee cup, she prayed it dissipated soon, or she might be in more trouble than the skier.

By the time she got to her office, she was calmer, her hands less blue and her features schooled. She knew some of her colleagues talked about her behind her back, but she liked to think their opinions didn’t matter to her. All she cared about was making money and being financially secure, so she never needed to rely on anyone again.

Hey, Jacqueline, the team’s administrative assistant, Shelly, looked up from her place near the entrance to the department, Percy said to tell you he’s in the executive boardroom on the top floor already. He said you’re going to present your plan for the skier before he does the actor. He said to go straight up when you get in.

the platform.

I’m not late,Jacqueline muttered as she looked at her phone.

No. You’re not. He’s early because he’s freaking out. I guess Mr. Vaughn was not impressed with the plans from the meeting yesterday afternoon and it was why he delegated one of them to you entirely.

Shit rolls downhill, she quipped as she threw her coat and backpack onto her chair. She rifled through the bag to make sure everything was in it before shoving it back onto her shoulder, grabbing her coffee cup and strutting down the hall to elevator to take to the conference room.

It felt like she was late and therefore the three minute wait time to ride up the elevator to the top floor, a floor she’d never been blessed to step foot on before, felt intèrminable. Reaching the conference room, she was wishing she’d taken more time to get caffeinated. Giving the door a shove open, she grimaced at Percy who was hunched over his laptop with a miserable expression on his face.

That bad?

Not if you have a decent plan for the skier because my mind can’t work two catastrophes at once. There was a time when these fools saved their antics, spreading them out so we can satch our breath. Tell me you have something?

I have something. She moved to sit next to him at the table setting her coffee and her laptop down. I don’t know if the big guy will go for it though.

We can’t cut an Olympic hopeful,Percy shot her a suspicious look.

As if.

He also was pissed off yesterday when Chaz said to expose the girl’s history and make it so she instigated everything.

Like I would offer up a kid and tarnish her reputation more than anyone else’s. Life is hard enough without being labeled the girl who seduced and ruined an athlete’s life. She smirked, I have a better idea.

What is it?

We’re blaming the college and his college coach. We’re also going to send him to a retreat where they deal with addiction issues over the winter semester break.

Addiction? The guy is clean as a whistle.

He’s addicted to pussy, or at least that’s the story we’re going with. She tried not to blush at her crass wording. She knew from the rumors how these guys talked in this room. He went

with three girls, accepting that the college wouldn’t let anyone young on campus and they were the ones who hired security for him who failed to see he was in a bad situation.

Percy looked at her, his mouth opening and closing and then he blinked slowly and looked away. Sure. If you can sell it to Mr. Vaughn, I’m in. Right now, I’m trying to deal with the guy who fucks in front of his kids so, bigger fish to fry and all.

Morning!Wilder Vaughn walked into the room with his assistant and his CFO. Tell me you both have something better for me than whatever shit you tried to sell me yesterday, Percy.

For clarification, Chaz tried to sell you shit, not me. I was in another meeting when he voiced his absurdity.

Jacqueline had never been in a meeting this informal with her CEO and director before and she found herself staring at the table as the CEO removed his jacket and flung it over the back of a chair, rolled his sleeves up to his elbows, revealing an impressive amount of tattoos on both arms and then wiggled his fingers at Percy.

Come on then, lay it on me.

Jacqueline is going first.Percy threw it out there.

You’re not saving the best for last, Percy. I know you too

me on it, I’ll be in a better more collaborative mood so when yours is shit I’ll help you sort it out.

Percy grinned as he leaned back in his chair. We’ve been doing this dance for fifteen years.

Yeah but this is the first time you’ve brought poor Jacqueline in to pitch. She’s wondering why you’re being such an ass.He looked at her.

She finally met his gaze and felt her heart racing again. She’d had an absurd attraction to the enigmatic man who ran Vaughn Professional Consulting. Since the day she’d started working for the company she’d been secretly ogling the man.

She wasn’t alone. There wasn’t a woman in the building who didn’t dream of him suddenly noticing them and then bedding them. He was every straight woman’s fantasy. Tall. Broad shouldered. Tapered waist. Charismatic in the way a professional manager would need to be to schmooze his clients and make them feel secure and confident in his abilities. He had a broad smile, with perfect white teeth, eyes the color of stormy grey sky and a rugged masculinity to him, despite the fact he was working in New York where many people were too shiny

and metro.

Now, his direct gaze was focused on her and as if he noticed she was staring at him like a hungry cat eyeing a mouse, he lifted 9nq eyebrow.

She cleared her throat and started to open her laptop for the presentation she’d prepared. Stopping when he held his hand up to her she paused, what?

I don’t want your shiny, pretty presentation you would give to the client. It’s the five of us in here. Nothing that gets said in these walls leaves these walls. Percy has been commenting for months and months about how damn brilliant and innovative

you are. Here is the chance for you to prove it. Talk to me. There’s no client here to impress.

Yeah, only the CEO to impress. She muttered and then caught herself. Already off to a good start with her smart mouth. It was time to buckle up.
