“Hello, my child,” the Queen Mother spoke softly.

“Hi,” Jaqueline moved to lay on the grass next to the pond where her mother was watching the goings on in the other realms with a serene expression on her face. “What are you looking at?”

“The news of your arrival has reached all the realms now. Delegations are starting to begin the migration to your little town. There is an alpha wolf shifter who has been a bit of a shit,” she commented with a twist of her lips, “and a miserable sod because again, he has not met his mate yet.”

“Is he as bad as Bjorn?” she grimaced with disgust.

“No but I believe Bjorn is capable of redemption, his father as

well.”

“You think Oberon is capable of redemption?” she sat up in disbelief. “No way.”

“All beasts are capable, Jacqueline. They need to make a

choice. Oberon is alone without even his mate.”

“His mate?” Jacqueline questioned curiously. She couldn’t

recall Bar ever mentioning his mother.

“Yes. Bjorn has let her know what has transpired. She has

refused to go to Oberon to the Southern Realm. She sent a message to him that she is ashamed and needs time

to come to grips with his treatment of their sons. It is my

understanding she will make a trip to visit Bar at some point,

but she stood by her mate in the past and their relationship

is fractured. When he cut them out, he cut them all out,

including his mother. They aren’t close. He’s told more than one person he’s an orphan or his mother has died. There is anger in him.”

“How are we going to be able to parent?” Jacqueline asked with a frown. “How do two people who have no experience with actual, decent parents, raise children who won’t be utter

assholes?”

The Queen Mother threw her head back and laughed, “you will do just fine. You have Fawn to learn from.”

“He doesn’t like humans?”

“I’m saying that unless all of you can shift, there is always

going to be someone feeling left out. Bar needed you

Jacqueline. I saw his spirit and knew he needed you, as much as the Vaughn twins did. I knew he was meant to be so much more than the spare prince his father made him to be. The four of you are perfectly made for one another.”

“I guess,” she whispered sadly. “Are there any tips on how I can connect with my bear mate? I could feel Orson’s excitement when Rafferty put me in a particular position.”

“I wasn’t giving them.” Jacqueline countered. “I’m just saying I could feel his urge to shift and push Rafferty out of the way but getting mounted by a bear seems strange, despite the book that Bar left on my nightstand. I hate there is someone being left out.” A tear rolled down her cheek into the grass under her head. “I want him to feel my love physically, but I don’t want him to think I’m weirded out. “Oh, my goodness, Jacqueline, these are not the questions I thought you would come to ask me,” the Queen Mother gave an exasperated huff. “You’re asking the wrong things.” Her mother whispered under her breath to a handful of flowers who were shaking with laughter at her feet, “all that brilliance and possibility in her head and she’s asking me about giving blowjobs to bears.”

Jacqueline smacked the ground frustratedly. She gave a giggle when her tiny stick friend popped up and jumped onto her cheek, “well hello little friend.” She stared into its eyes

and felt immediately relaxed. She ran her finger over the spiny back and smiled as it preened under her touch. “It is good to see you too,” she whispered happily. She looked back at her mother, “I know it takes a lot out of my physical form,

but I do so love when I come here and see my friends.”

“Even Orson?”

“Even Orson.”

“I’m sure he would love me more if I had a beast counterpart

he could roam the forest with and mount on occasion.” She

watched the little stick insect do a little circle on her chest

and then snuggle down to sleep. Jacqueline looked at her mother, “do you think Orson would be content if I crawled into his den with him to sleep like this?”

“Possibly. You are still not asking the right questions, my child.”

She stroked the tiny insect with a sigh. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to be asking! It’s not like I can ask to be a bear shifter. God even if I could, it would mean the twins would be left out.” At the lack of response from her mother, she shot her a curious look, “can I?” When her mother rolled her hand out as if asking her to continue her thoughts, “could I ask for all three of us to be given an ability to have bears to keep Orson company?”

“I mean, you are the daughter of the Queen Mother. Quite

spoiled and very loved. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do

for you. Let’s be honest, I revoked the life essence of Jacinta

Frost because I was tired of her plotting against you. Short of violating natural laws like letting you resurrect the dead or wiping out entire species, there isn’t much I wouldn’t do for you Jacqueline.”

She sat up excitedly, catching the insect in her palm, “what?”

“I mean, I did give Bar plenty of fae traits. Why can’t I give my only child and the two men I placed as her protectors the abilities Bar possesses?”

Tears ran unchecked down Jacqueline’s face as she stared at her creator while she cradled the tiny insect to her chest as a

sob tore from her chest, “you can do that?”

All I ask is you do not let power corrupt you and I do not feel that in you.”

“I won’t. I will never do anything which would make you disappointed in me, Mother. I only want to make you proud.”

“You have done so every day from the moment of your conception. I love you, my child.” She leaned over Jacqueline and kissed the top of her head. “It is time to go home and be

with your mates.”

Jacqueline flung her arms around her mother and hugged her tight, “I always miss you so much when I’m not with you.”

“But I am always with you. Bring Beetle with you,” she

As her mother smoothed her hair one more time Jacqueline felt a surge of power swell throughout her body and she gasped in awe of the feeling.

“What is happening?” Jacqueline asked with a trembling

voice.

“Well, I have given you a companion. You will never be alone again, Jacqueline.”

She blinked fat watery tears off her lashes, “neither will

Orson.”

“Neither will Orson.”

As her mother kissed her forehead sending her back to sleep and back to her mates, Jacqueline’s heart never felt fuller.
