“You’re being unreasonable.”

“You’re being stupid.”

He followed her into the first little shop she ducked into.

She immediately tucked her hands into her pockets as she

tried to quell her rage at the fact he was following her. The shop was a little candy shop, and she couldn’t help but look around the place with excitement. As a kid she’d rarely had treats and as she got older, she never splurged on much of

anything.

Today however, she was throwing caution to the wind. Her mates were rich and before they’d got on the plane, Wilder had pressed the corporate card in her hand again. She could load up on anything she wanted, and she knew he wouldn’t bat an eyelash. She immediately moved to a counter of fudge.

“Can I get a slice of the candy cane flavor?”

“Sure.” The girl behind the counter grinned. “Lover’s quarrel?” she asked as she watched Jack pouting angrily.

“That’s a long visit.”

“It’s a work thing. My boss has a client who we’re working with who is here in town. Tell me, if I want to avoid the lounge

“Oh well,” Dana smiled, “there is a diner in town where you

can get lunch and dinner. There is a café which sells really good coffee and breakfast and pastries and stuff. There’s three pubs though if you like pub food or just want to hang

out and have a beer.” She waved one hand around her as

she weighed the chunk of fudge out on a scale, “I work here in the day and then at Rooster’s at night. They are known

for their chicken burgers and chicken wings and chicken nuggets, but the owner also brews his own batch beer. If you like chicken and you like beer, it’s a decent place.”

“I might see you there then,” she pulled some cash from her pocket and paid for her fudge. “Thanks Dana.”

“I look forward to seeing you again Jacqueline!”

Jacqueline exited the shop and beelined for the next one.

“How did you do that?” Jack asked as he followed her towards the shop which apparently sold all things Christmas.

“Do what?”

“Hate me in one breath but be so kind and civil to the lady in the shop? It was like a switch.”

“I don’t hate you Jack.” She shot him a sideways glance, “I do not like how you feel entitled to be part of my life or to form an opinion about me but otherwise, I could give a rat’s ass about you at all.”

“Do you know how many brothers I’ve had over the course of my life?” She stopped walking to look up at him, craning her neck to make sure she met his eyes. “Eighteen. I’ve had older brothers. I can honestly say, even when I was in the home where two of my foster sisters stole my shit on the regular and got me beaten more than once saying I lied about shit I didn’t lie about, never, not ever, did any of them come at me the way you and your family have. “Now if you don’t mind, I can see in the store window over

there, that they sell Christmas decorations and I’m thinking

I’d like to get one of those Grinchy ones they are showing in

the display because it’s really suiting my mood.”

“You’ve had thirty foster siblings in your life?”

“Yup.” She wished he’d fuck off. As they walked under a big

oak tree she flicked her fingers upwards and the little icy shards flew up and dropped some snow on his shoulders, but he merely brushed it off easily.

“Your powers are coming in stronger now that you’re surrounded by the snow and ice.”

“Jacqueline,” Jack sighed loudly, “what if I promise not to

“Jack, I think that would be hard to do since she’s right there.” She jerked her thumb in the direction of the window display where Jacinta was peering into the shop as if looking for them. “Now if you don’t want me to cause a real scene, get her the fuck away from me.”

Shooting an apologetic look to the attendant for her

language, she motioned to a big ugly Christmas sweater with

the Grinch on it. “I’ll take that too!”

How do you deal with her constant snobbery and bullshit? Twenty seconds in her presence and I want to plant my fist in her mouth.” She turned back to Christie and passed her the money to pay for her purchases and then walked out of the shop with her bag swinging at her side.

Jacqueline wanted to screech as both siblings followed her out, one prancing like she was walking a red carpet and the other stomping like his feet were made of lead. Instead, she nodded at the smiling people passing her by and looked for her next shopping destination. She saw it right away. A bookstore. She quickly crossed the street, enjoying that there was no real traffic to dodge to get to it.

At the sound of Jacinta’s whining question of why they were even here, she contemplated how easy it would be to zap herself out of here to her apartment back in New York. She opened the bookstore and was immediately met with the largest man she’d ever met behind the counter. He was gorgeous. Dark, honey brown eyes, sharp cheekbones and a jawline full of a beard which screamed manly man. She could picture this guy in the flannel shirt he was wearing chopping wood one–handed with an axe as big as her leg.

He lifted an eyebrow at her overt ogling of her, “hello. You are new.” 2/8

for drinks and they said later. I mean they made excuses for

the moment, but she managed to get them to agree to later.

“Vaughn twins?” the man behind the counter spoke seriously. “Not Rafferty and Wilder.”

“Yes,” she spun back. “You know them?”

“I do. You are their mate.” The man spoke, his dark eyes searching Jacquelines.
