The Stand-In Who Burned the Script novel Chapter 31

Jonah carefully helped Amara up, meticulously checking to see if she was hurt.

Once he finished, he turned to look at Vivian.

This time, he didn't say a word.

But his cold, predatory gaze said it all.

"Vivian, I know you hate us, but Dad didn't do anything wrong." Amara leaned most of her weight against the man, looking as if she might collapse at any second, her voice completely devoid of strength.

Her complexion was starkly pale as she whispered, "You didn't see it when you stormed out, but Dad was already having chest pains."

"Then what are you doing out here?"

"..."

The question caught Amara off guard.

Vivian repeated herself. "Dad's having chest pains, so shouldn't a sweet, innocent daughter like you be by his side? Why come out here looking for me? Just looking for an excuse to slack off?"

Amara: "..."

"Vivian."

Jonah hadn't spoken since earlier, but now he fixed her with an icy stare. "I told you before. Keep your hands off Amara."

"Are you implying you saw me lay a hand on her again?"

The man remained silent.

His furrowed brow seemed to say: *What else would I think?*

"Dr. Granger, let it go..." Amara tugged gently at Jonah's hand, biting her lip. "I'm fine. Vivian has actually been very restrained today."

"..."

You had to admit, the woman had a way with words.

She was undoubtedly hinting to Jonah that Vivian had treated her far worse in the past.

But Vivian didn't have many virtues; her only real redeeming quality was that she refused to suffer in silence.

She could take criticism, but she absolutely refused to be framed.

Especially when she was already in a bad mood.

So, she rolled her wrists and strode forward, her movements as sharp and fluid as someone testing the weight of a deadly weapon.
