Silas looked back, his dark gaze instantly locking onto her. "Do not call me husband!"
Vivian smiled radiantly. "Why not? If you think it's unfair, you can call me wife."
"..."
He walked out.
Watching him leave, the smile in Vivian's eyes slowly faded.
She couldn't say the man was awful, but his defenses were completely impenetrable. Trying to get anything out of him without offering something substantial in return was harder than scaling a sheer cliff.
But after this latest incident, their relationship seemed to have shifted a little.
It wasn't obvious, but it was a pleasant surprise.
Like how he would willingly wrap his arms around her when they slept at night.
Or how he would go out of his way to instruct Martha to cook meals that were good for her recovery.
Whether he liked her or not, showing he cared even a fraction was progress.
Vivian spent the next three days lounging around the house, alternating between sleeping and eating. She visibly filled out a little, looking much healthier.
"Martha, you don't need to make dinner for me tonight. I'm going out."
"Who are you going to meet, Miss Fairchild?"
She didn't answer. A single cold glance was enough to make Martha's legs feel weak.
"Miss... I-I was just asking casually. If you'd rather not say, pretend I never asked."
Vivian lazily withdrew her gaze, speaking flatly. "It's not that you can't ask. I just don't like people prying into my private life. That goes for everyone."
"Understood..."
Martha wiped the sweat from her forehead, her heart pounding.
Miss Fairchild usually seemed so approachable, but in reality, her presence was just as intimidating as Mr. Sterling's. It was... quite overwhelming.
"If there's nothing else, go back to your work. I'll be heading out soon. When he gets back tonight, just tell him I went to see a friend."
"Yes, ma'am."
Vivian stood up and went upstairs.
Checking the time, she took a shower and changed clothes.
