The Stand In Wife's Revenge novel Chapter 68

Chapter 68

I’m not sure how it happened.

One minute the gentle hum of the night was drowning out the world outside my window as I fell asleep. Then I found myself in a nightmare that was too heavy and real to get out of. Initially it began similarly to any other dream. Keep quiet. void.

Then the emptiness soon gave way to something suffocating and darker. I stood by myself in the middle of a huge deserted field. Beneath my feet the black charred grass was twisted.

There was nothing but the deafening silence that went on foreverno sound no life. Above me the sky had a peculiar gray tint as if a storm had been approaching but had never materialized. It felt like the wind was whispering to me but the words were lost in the

distance.

The wind was cold and sharp. I couldnt quite put my finger on why but I felt a chill go down my spine and a sense of unease grow. A problem. Although my legs wouldnt move every part of me cried out that I had to get out and run but I wasnt sure what it was.

They felt heavy as though they were cemented to the ground. I attempted to move forward but I had the impression that the earth was dragging me downward and into the shadows below. Then I heard it. There was a distant dragging sound. At first it seemed as though someone was approaching me slowly but not in the typical manner. No there was something wrong about this sound.

Something that isnt natural. The sound was getting closer and louder and my heart was racing. I attempted to scan the area but it seemed to go on forever. The sound of those footsteps approaching was the only indication that anyone or anything was there. Afterward it

ceased.

Everything fell silent abruptly. I froze my breath catching in my throat. The air was oppressively heavy. As though to alert me to an impending danger something I couldnt see but could sense with every fiber of my being I could feel my pulse in my ears getting faster

and faster.

Once more the footsteps began. nearer. louder. Even so my body would not cooperate with my desire to turn around and flee. Something invisible held my feet firmly in place. Panic seeped into my veins as my chest constricted. No sound came out of my lips when I tried to

scream.

My throat was constricting, my mouth was dry and I was immobilized by terror. Then I came across it. Initially it was merely a shadow a silhouette that appeared out of the shadows. However as it approached I was able to make out more of ita tall menacing figure with an

odd quality.

It appeared to be a nightmare materializing in front of my eyes as its edges shifted and blurred like smoke. The closer it came the colder the air became and I could feel the darkness engulfing me. I tried to move and take a step back but I was still unable to do so.

My body refused to abide by my commands. My spine tingled as the figure approached and it had nothing to do with the temperature. It paralyzed me. Fear encircled my lungs forcing out any scream or breath. It had an overpowering presence. It had no face or at least I could hardly see it. It was merely a void a shadow.

Even so I sensed the eyes that were somehow present but werent there. A chilly hand with fingers that curled like claws reached out from the shadows toward me.

I was immobile and unable to run and as it approached I could feel the air growing colder and thinner until it was all I could think about.

I had the impression that my life was being drained from me as its icy cold fingers touched my skin.

After my breath caught in my chest I was able to choke out a feeble cry for assistance. And then I heard it suddenly.

His voicea voice. “Ava

The sound made my heart skip a beat and I winced. Alexander. The urgency in his voice sliced like a knife through the fear. I looked around trying to find him but he wasnt there.

Just the shadow. Ava!

His voice was louder this time and I sensed a change in myself. A shock a spark of life. I was suddenly able to move. I had air to breathe. I could think. I wasnt yet free though. The shadow was still there beckoning me in with its icy hand as it grew more powerful.

As though the earth were attempting to engulf me and drag me down with it I felt my feet lift off the ground. I was unable to see breathe or think. I only sensed the darkness. I heard Alexanders voice again this time without fear as the figures icy fingers were ready to touch my skin. It was authoritative. It had a lot of strength.

Get up Ava!It was all broken.

The fear the cold and the darkness all broke apart like a broken glass window. My heart was racing so hard that I thought it might burst from my chest but the nightmare had passed. Everything was gone including the field the shadow and the oppressive cold.

My eyes flew open as I gasped the surroundings becoming hazy and confusing. My breathing felt sharp and erratic as if I had just finished a marathon. Even though the dreams shadows were still there lurking in the back of my mind reality was starting to creep in. My room

was where I was. Secure.

My body was shaking still reeling from the nightmares aftershocks so I threw off the covers. I tried to steady myself by gripping the edge of the bed with trembling hands. It had seemed very real. All three elementsthe figure, the cold and the darknesshad seemed to be there ready to devour me.

I kept getting the uneasy feeling that something wasnt right. that it wasnt merely a fantasy. that somehow the nightmare had not ended. It was beyond my comprehension. I was unable to explain why my skin still crawled and why my heart was still pounding from the memory of that empty cold hand.

I forced myself to relax by closing my eyes but it didnt work. The fear persisted gnawing at the corners of my mind and not leaving. I no longer knew what was real. All I knew was that I had to get hold of myself in order to stop the shaking and force the nightmares lingering

effects to go.
