The Stand In Wife’s Revenge

Chapter 85

The steam continued to cling to the air as I exited the shower seemingly attempting to smother the weight of my thoughts. I had hurriedly dressed as I made my way to the closet my pants still wet from the water clung to my legs. When I wanted to feel I reached for a sleeve of shirt I always wore. Typical.

The cool cloth brushed against my skin but it didnt make the pain inside me go away. It couldnt. I went to the shelf where I kept the items 1 wanted to remember. However I didnt find the pricey mementos cufflinks or luxury watches particularly appealing tonight. It was Fionas framed photo.

The one I concealed behind all the unimportant things in my life tucked away at the back. I reached for it feeling as though it were a delica object that I might break if I wasnt careful my fingers grazing the cool frame. The photo was old and had some yellowing around the edges.

The love in her eyes caught in that moment remained burning brightly even though the colors had faded over time. I took the frame in hands and sat on the edge of the bed looking into her face.

It was one of the infrequent moments we managed to capture on camera a candid shot. Her lips curled into that unique playful smile as her eyes glistened with mischief. I ran my finger along the frames edge letting my thoughts wander to a time before the hospital and before my never-ending fear of losing her had taken over.

It felt like yesterday when I recalled my first encounter with Fiona. We were at one of those corporate sterile events where everyone is dressed

in the same mask of civility.

However I then noticed her standing in the corner of the room staring at me with a knowing look that said more than words could. The sunlight had been shining on her hair as she stood by the window giving it a golden halo. She was focusing on me even though she was speaking to someone else.

And everything else had vanished into the background at that precise moment. All traces of the rooms noise glass clinking and conversational murmurs had vanished. We had felt as though the universe had shrunk to the two of us. When she approached me her smile was more than past curiosity or flirtation it was a deeper expression.

She seemed to recognize me even though we had never spoken as evidenced by her understanding smile. With a warm and smooth voice the stated I dont think weve met.. It was hard to deny the connection that was made instantly.

By the end of the hours of conversation we had that evening I was certain that I would never be able to leave her. She affected people in that way. on me. I found myself wanting to hear her laugh repeatedly because it was rich and enticing like music.

The quieter times on the other hand were the ones that deepened my love for her. The times we didnt have to talk at all. My hand on hera while we sat together would make everything seem flawless despite its flaws.

Few people were able to witness Fionas gentle side despite her intense passion and fire.

..We were in a tiny café that seemed to exist outside of time on a rainy afternoon. The air smelled of coffee and the rain drumused soltiv was a cappuccino with a dash of cinnamon and we were conversing as though against the windows. Fiona had placed her usual order which nothing had happened.

However she paused in the middle and turned to face me. She seemed to see right through me with her intense dark eyes. “You know..” she quietly “I’ve never understood why people keep their hearts hidden. You know you dont need to be flawless to be loved.”

I had been taken aback by her quiet strength and vulnerability when I had looked at her. I became aware of how much I had been keeping fr her at that point. The darker aspects of myself the ones I was embarrassed of and the ones I feared would turn her off were hidden from her.
