Juno turned a deaf ear to the commotion. Dropping the photos, she reached out and closed her hand around Rhiannon's throat, slowly lifting until the girl was forced onto her tiptoes.
Matilda couldn't believe her eyes. Even with her standing right there, this wild girl still dared to act out! Such blatant disregard for her elders! Someone like this couldn't be kept in the house, or it would only be a matter of time before disaster struck.
"Are you all blind?!" the older woman shrieked at the staff. "Hurry up and pull this lunatic off! If anything happens to Rhiannon, I'll make you all pay!"
The two paralyzed maids finally snapped out of their daze, rushing forward to pry Juno's fingers away. "Miss Juno! Please, calm down! Just talk it out, there's no need for violence!"
Wilma, seizing the chaotic moment, sneakily pinched Juno hard to get some petty revenge.
The racket upstairs caught the attention of Gwendolyn Jagger, who had just walked through the front door. Without even pausing to take off her shoes, she rushed up the stairs, only to find the group tangled together.
"What is going on here?!"
As the lady of the house, her voice carried absolute authority. At her shout, the maids immediately let go and scrambled back. With the crowd parting, Juno's death grip on Rhiannon was fully exposed.
Gwendolyn stared in utter shock. "Juno?"
The girl didn't even flinch, only loosening her grip just enough so her victim could breathe. "I asked you a question. Are you deaf?"
Rhiannon cast a desperate, pleading look at Gwendolyn.
Still trying to process the scene, the older woman didn't immediately intervene. She knew her daughter wouldn't fly into a rage without a good reason.
Juno's grip tightened again, her knuckles turning white as blood seeped from the existing wound on the back of her hand. It was as if she couldn't feel the pain at all, completely fixated on her target. It was clear she wouldn't let go until she got an answer.
"Someone... someone met me and gave this to me," Rhiannon choked out.
"What did they say?"
"Nothing... they just handed it over..."
Juno unceremoniously dropped her to the floor.
Throughout the entire exchange, she didn't so much as glance at the crying girl on the floor.
Walking up to Juno's door, she knocked gently, carefully choosing her words. "Juno? ...May I come in?"
There was no response.
Just then, a maid hurried upstairs with a first-aid kit, silently handing it to Gwendolyn before retreating.
"Sweetheart... you're bleeding. Let Mom clean that up for you, okay?"
Inside the room, the girl heard the soft plea. Her eyelashes fluttered as she instinctively glanced at her bleeding hand. It seemed that aside from her mentor, someone else in this world actually cared about her.
After asking a few more times to no avail, Gwendolyn took a breath and pushed the door open.
She crouched down in front of her. Before Juno could say a word, she kept talking. "I did ask before coming in, but you didn't answer. I was just so worried about your hand that I let myself in."
