Juno's face was terrifyingly grim as she stared daggers through the screen at Lorcan.
Lorcan let out a scoffing laugh. "Since you're involved with him, you obviously know he's an illegitimate child. I first met him when he was three years old.
"Even at that age, Chuck had an iron will. It made him seem mature, which my father loved. Because of him, my father started paying less attention to me.
"That felt dangerous. Growing up, I was always the golden child. Everyone bowed down to me.
"But that little brat? He never once looked at me with respect."
Lorcan set his cup down, looking at Juno as if expecting her to validate his ego. "I was the eldest son of the Yates family! And I wasn't the only child my father had. All the other kids, born to low-status women, practically crawled on their knees when they saw me. They treated every word I said like gospel. So what gave Chuck the right to be so defiant?"
"His stubbornness disgusted me."
He spat the words out, his hatred for Chuck burning intensely.
Chuck had absolutely no backing, so where did he get the nerve to hold his head high?
Lorcan made it his mission to break him.
Chuck's mere existence felt like an insult to his authority.
Lorcan looked genuinely perplexed by the memory. "He was a dirty little bastard who shouldn't have even seen the light of day. What gave him the right to act superior?"
Juno glared at him coldly.
Her eyes gave away nothing.
The momentary manic rage on Lorcan's face faded, and he quickly composed himself, returning to his arrogant smirk. "When I was young, I loved cats. But one of the cats my father gave me was incredibly aggressive. It scratched me multiple times.
"So, guess what I did?"
Lorcan was completely unashamed. "I sure did. I have no idea if he actually respected me deep down, but after I did that to him, he was as loyal as a dog. He couldn't function without me.
"Well, I've told my story. Any thoughts, Ms. Mercer?"
Juno's voice was lethal. "I should have killed you the other day."
If she had, he wouldn't be sitting there gloating right now.
She had been too lenient.
"Heh," Lorcan chuckled lightly. "I'm not that easy to kill. And as long as I'm breathing, Chuck will never set foot in the Yates family again."
Chuck only stayed away because he wanted to. If he actually decided to return, someone like Lorcan wouldn't be able to stop him for a second.
"He's a master manipulator. It wasn't until his wings were fully grown that I realized he had been faking it the whole time. Hah, he was a scheming little psycho at three years old. I fell for his innocent act far too many times. By the time I realized what he was doing, he was already a massive threat to me.
