Miles knew his boss would never truly mistake anyone else for her, but in a life-or-death situation, he wasn't willing to risk even a fraction of a percent of a chance. Even if it just vaguely looked like her, he was going to throw himself in the line of fire.
.
After the brief surgery to remove the bullet, Chuck was transferred to a private suite. Luckily, it was just a clean through-and-through shot to the upper arm. Nothing vital was hit.
Juno stood at the foot of his bed, totally still, just staring at him.
Lying back against the pillows, Chuck wisely kept his mouth shut.
The attending physician popped in, gave a few standard postoperative instructions, and quickly excused himself.
"Look at you," she said, her flawless face completely devoid of sympathy. "You never used to be this pathetic."
Back in the day, he could walk through a warzone without a spot of dust on his suit. Now, he was taking stray bullets in shopping malls.
His pale lips twitched. "It was a trick of the light."
"Once the bullet wound heals, you should schedule an eye exam."
Morgan had stationed his security team down the corridor, while Miles stood guard right outside the door.
"Tell your boss to stay the hell away from her," Morgan muttered.
"That's way above my paygrade," Miles shot back instantly.
Morgan didn't say another word, and Miles remained silent. They couldn't stand each other anyway.
If it weren't for her, Morgan wouldn't have wasted a single second standing outside this room.
Click, clack, click.
Both men looked up at the sound of frantic high heels racing down the corridor. It was Janet.
Morgan gave a subtle flick of his wrist.
Before anyone could even blink, two of Morgan's massive bodyguards materialized in front of her, forming an impenetrable wall.
Juno stepped into the hallway, her long legs moving with predatory grace. One hand rested casually in her pocket, projecting an aura of absolute dominance.
Miles shot Janet a look that clearly said, May God have mercy on your soul, and stepped back.
If she had just quietly left, everything would have been fine. But she just had to throw a tantrum right outside the door, practically begging for Juno to come out and deal with her.
Janet took a nervous step back, glaring suspiciously at the other girl. "Why are you coming out of his room?"
She knew there was something sketchy going on between those two.
Juno didn't answer. Instead, her dark eyes slowly swept over Janet's outfit, taking in every detail from head to toe.
When Miles told her about the resemblance earlier, she hadn't realized just how blatant it was. But seeing it in person was a different story.
The jacket, the pants, the boots—Juno owned the exact same pieces. Janet had even styled her hair and loaded it with hairspray to copy Juno's signature messy updo perfectly.
She looked the girl dead in the eyes, raised a single brow, and spoke with terrifying, glacial clarity. "Strip her down."
