Riley jolted awake, a wave of surprise rushing through her.
sebastian?
What was he doing here?
And so soon–it hadn’t even been ten minutes since she’d texted him back.
“Let him in. please,” she said, sinoothing her voice as she sat up straighter.
The door swung open, and a tall, familiar figure filled the doorway, outlined against the bright hallway lights.
Sebastian was dressed in a sharp black suit, his hair neatly styled back, making his striking features look even more intense.
His presence seemed to shrink the small clinic room, tightening the air around them.
But what stood out–clashing oddly with his imposing demeanor–was the small insulated lunch bag hanging from his hand.
“How did you… find this place?”
“Well,” he said, his eyes dropping to her pale face, “you only said you were in the hospital–no details, nothing about where. Seemed serious. If I’d asked which hospital, you probably wouldn’t have told me. So I took care of it myself.”
Took care of it himself.
The phrase sounded casual, but it spoke volumes about his reach and connections.
In a city like Havenbrook, tracking someone down to a specific clinic this fast wasn’t something just anyone could pull off.
As he spoke, Sebastian unzipped the insulated bag.
He pulled out a container and carefully–a little clumsily–poured some into a bowl.
Just then, Isolde walked in on her rounds.

She glanced from Sebastian to the bowl in his hands, studied Riley’s face briefly, then said in a professional tone, “Chicken soup–that’s fine. Good for getting her strength back. But sir, just make sure nothing else gets brought in. She’s in a fragile state right now, lots of dietary restrictions.”
Hearing that. Sebastian asked lightly, “Doctor, what exactly happened to her?”
Isolde didn’t catch the warning look Riley shot her. Wearing a politely concerned expression, she explained, “Ms. Harper was brought in this afternoon with acute heavy bleeding. Things were touch–and–go for a while. We’ve stabilized her now, but… there may be serious long–term effects on her ability to have children.”
Riley hadn’t expected Isolde to lay it all out like that in front of Sebastian.
She let out a sharp, deliberate cough, trying to cut her off.
Finally picking up the hint, Isolde said, “Oh, listen to me, going on and on. I’ll check on the other rooms. You two take your time.”
With that, she turned and left quickly, closing the door behind her and leaving the room in heavy silence–her part done, no further explanation needed.
The quiet that followed felt thick and uneasy.
Sebastian’s hand, still holding the bowl of soup, paused in midair. His face showed no particular emotion, but the atmosphere around him seemed to grow heavier.
He set the steaming bowl down in front of Riley, his eyes fixed intently on her. After a long moment, he asked, “What exactly did she mean by that?”
Riley’s heart gave a hard thump.
She studied the unreadable man in front of her.
The Ashfords, she knew, would probably be relieved she couldn’t have kids–they’d see it as one less complication down the road.
But Sebastian? As the heir to one of Nexopolis‘ oldest, most prominent families, what would he think?
Theirs was a marriage of convenience, no strings attached emotionally–but children could still have been part of the deal someday.
Riley wasn’t willing to bring a child into the world lightly, not for something as cold as mutual benefit.

Maybe it was better to lay it out clearly now–let him know there was an issue, and spare them both any false expectations.
Now was as good a time as any to see where he stood.
She met his gaze, offered a faint, weary smile, and said quietly, “Exactly what it sounded like, Mr. Torres. It means I might never be able to have children.
“Your family–the Torres family–they’re one of the big names. I’m sure heirs matter. My situation… I’m guessing that’s not something you or your family would accept.”
Before she could go on, Sebastian cut her off flatly.
“I don’t mind.”
Three words, clear and firm, without a hint of doubt.
Riley stared, stunned.
