Having neglected his own company's affairs for some time, Daniel had a mountain of project developments and backlogged work to sort through. He had been so swamped all morning that he completely skipped lunch.
His assistant guided him straight to Luke's office. Luke was currently tied up with the R&D team, modifying a massive batch of system parameters.
It was not until half past two that Luke finally returned to his office, looking mildly surprised to see his brother waiting there. "Daniel, what brings you here?"
"Have you eaten yet?" Daniel asked.
"Yeah, I had something." Luke had practically inhaled two bagels earlier just to keep going.
"I came to ask you about a certain matter," Daniel began.
Luke walked over and dropped onto the leather sofa, waiting for his brother to continue.
"Tell me the truth. What exactly is going on between you and Willa?"
"Nothing is going on," Luke replied evenly. "I just want her to be able to work and live her life like a normal person."
Daniel narrowed his sharp, dark eyes, cutting straight to the point. "Do you like her romantically?"
Luke froze. He met his brother's intense stare, remaining quiet for a long moment before finally lowering his eyes. "I do not know."
When he had watched her stand in the sunlight, playing her violin with such raw emotion, he realized she was meant to be exactly that, radiant and free, not a lifeless, captive bird suffocating in a cage.
"And what if I told you to send her back to the Manning family right now?" Daniel challenged.
Luke looked up at him but offered no response.
"You can protect her for a little while, but you cannot protect her forever," Daniel pressed. "At the end of the day, she is still tied to the Manning family."
"I will protect her for as long as I can. Did Jeffrey contact you?"
Without another word, Daniel turned and strode out of the office.
Left completely alone, Luke remained seated on the sofa, his head bowed as he sank into deep, unspoken thoughts.
As Daniel drove back to his own company, his phone rang. It was Kate, who was already on her way back from Oakridge Estate.
Before she could even launch into her complaints, Daniel asked, "Did you meet Willa?"
"I did," Kate replied, her tone dripping with thinly veiled disdain. "She is certainly beautiful, but that is all she is, a pretty, fragile vase. She does not even come close to Ivy. I honestly have no idea how the Manning family raised her to be so painfully sheltered. From what Felicia was implying, she clearly wants Luke and Willa to get together. But Willa doesn’t deserve him. Do you think we should mention this to your mother?"
"Not yet," Daniel replied firmly. "Let's just see how things play out between them."
Kate paused, clearly taken aback. "What do you mean by that?"
"If Luke genuinely has feelings for Willa, do you really think any of us can stop them from being together?"
