Max's expression remained completely unfazed. "That won't happen. I can write a formal guarantee and have a lawyer notarize it right here."
Colton's face remained stormy. No matter how exemplary Max's attitude was right now, Colton simply couldn't find it in his heart to accept the man. Yet, given the circumstances, his dissatisfaction was entirely moot. The die had already been cast.
"I just have one question for you," Colton demanded sharply. "Are you truly sincere toward Felicia this time?"
Max didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. "I am completely sincere."
Unsurprisingly, Colton wasn't swayed by a simple declaration. "Is it just because she looks pretty again? When she gets further along in her pregnancy and looks the way she did when she carried Anne, are you going to resent her? Are you going to force her to do chores and make her wait on you hand and foot while she's heavily pregnant?"
Those words caused Darin's expression to turn lethally cold. He knew Felicia had suffered terribly during her first pregnancy, but hearing Colton lay it out so bluntly ignited a fierce, blind rage in his chest. His breathing grew heavy as he glared at Max, looking as if he wanted nothing more than to beat him into a bloody pulp.
Max met Darin's furious stare before turning back to Colton, his tone steady. "I know my promises are hard for you to believe right now. I won't force her to remarry me immediately. If she feels uncomfortable in the future or simply doesn't want to, I will never force her."
Colton stared him down for a long moment, offering no further response. He stood up and headed upstairs.
The instant Colton vanished from sight, the atmosphere in the living room plummeted to freezing.
Greg glanced between the two remaining men. "Take your time," he muttered, quickly excusing himself from the tension.
For a long moment, Max and Darin sat in complete silence, locking eyes in a silent war of wills.
In the end, Max was left completely alone in the massive living room. He glanced up at the second floor, let out a long sigh, picked up the remote from the coffee table, and flipped the channel.
Suddenly, a soft meow echoed through the quiet house. Max traced the sound and got up, making his way toward the designated cat room. He pushed the door open to find the once-tiny kittens, now impressively plump, chasing each other frantically around the space.
As he stepped inside, the two felines instantly went on high alert. Spotting Max, they arched their backs and began hissing defensively.
Max picked up a feathered teaser wand from the floor and crouched down. "Come here."
Upstairs, Ava and Felicia sat together, deep in conversation. Felicia asked a barrage of questions, but Ava carefully curated her answers. Knowing Felicia was pregnant, Ava was terrified of saying anything that might trigger extreme emotional distress. In a strange way, the amnesia felt like a twisted blessing. At the very least, Felicia had forgotten the suffocating, depressive emotions that had plagued her for years, allowing her to focus entirely on a peaceful pregnancy.
