Felicia walked him to the door, murmuring a soft reminder to drive safely.

Max took a step closer, resting his large hand on the back of her head. He tilted her chin up and dropped a kiss on her forehead. "Remember to call and text me."

Felicia looked up at him. "Why would I call you if nothing is wrong?"

"You could ask if I have eaten, if I have had enough water, or if I am sleeping well," Max replied smoothly. "Or you could ask what I am doing. Or if I am feeling unwell."

Felicia had to fight the urge to roll her eyes. "You look perfectly fine to me right now."

"What if I am not fine tomorrow?" Max countered.

"And my asking is magically going to cure you?" she asked.

Max chuckled. "Maybe."

"I didn't realize I possessed such healing powers," Felicia said dryly.

"It is never too late to find out," Max replied.

Beside them, Anne covered her mouth, giggling quietly.

Max released Felicia and crouched down to meet the little girl's gaze. "What are you laughing at?"

"Daddy, you are being so childish," Anne declared.

Max reached out and ruffled her hair. "Not as childish as you."

Tucking her little hands into her pockets, Anne lifted her chin and huffed. "I am a kid. I am supposed to be childish. You are an adult."

"Max, it has been a while," Gavin's voice came through the speaker. "How have you been lately?"

"I am doing well. Did you call just to check up on me?" Max asked dryly.

Gavin laughed. "Of course. I am just showing I care. Judging by your tone, it sounds like life has been treating you exceptionally well. Care to share the good news?"

"If you are just looking to chat, I do not have the time right now," Max said.

"I saw Jeremy today," Gavin continued, undeterred. "He was sitting alone in a restaurant, drinking like a guy nursing a broken heart. So, I figured Evelynn must have chosen to be with you. Did you two remarry?"

"Rest assured, you will be invited when the time comes," Max replied coolly.

Gavin sighed dramatically. "Poor Evelynn. I cannot believe she actually fell for your tricks."

Max's voice darkened. "If you do not know what to say, keep your mouth shut."
