The Ugly Wife’s Stunning Comeback (Felicia and Max) novel Chapter 1182

"I just do not want to," she insisted stubbornly.

Max looked at her, his grip on her hand tightening slightly. "Alright, fine. If you do not want to be my assistant, I will arrange another suitable position for you. You can take your pick and decide what you want to do."

"I want to look around on my own first," Felicia replied.

"Alright," Max agreed easily. "Just let me know before you make a final decision."

Felicia murmured an agreement and reached for the remote to turn on the television.

Max's gaze drifted down to her stomach. At a casual glance, there was no visible change yet, but when he rested his large hand flat against her abdomen, he could clearly feel the slight, firm curve beneath her clothes. The moment his hand settled there, Felicia's body instinctively stiffened. The scorching heat of his palm seeped right through the fabric of her dress, warming her skin.

"What is wrong?" Max asked quietly.

Felicia forced her muscles to relax. "Your hands are too hot."

"Perfect for keeping you warm, then," he teased gently.

"I am not cold."

Before their banter could continue, the sound of footsteps echoed near the entrance. Darin had just returned to the Ross estate after working late. Walking into the living room, he stopped dead in his tracks. On the sofa, Max was cradling the back of Felicia's head, leaning in as if about to kiss her. Catching a glimpse of movement from the corner of his eye, Max paused his advance.

Sensing the sudden shift, Felicia turned her head. The moment she saw Darin standing in the doorway, she quickly shoved Max away. Max casually straightened his posture and looked at Darin. "You certainly have a talent for impeccable timing."

"Evidently so," Darin replied dryly.

Felicia felt her cheeks warm. "Darin, hi."

Darin composed his expression and nodded. "Dad mentioned earlier today that you were thinking about finding a job, Felicia?"

Felicia actually found Max's argument quite reasonable. Earlier that day, Heather had gossiped extensively about Darin and Savannah's stagnant romance. Savannah was currently spearheading a critical project, leaving her swamped with overtime. As a result, she had temporarily tossed Darin into the back of her mind. Ironically, the lack of attention had finally prompted Darin to initiate contact and text her first.

"I think I will pass on working at your company, Darin," Felicia said gently. "I want to think about my options a bit more on my own."

"Alright, whatever you prefer," Darin conceded. He then glared at Max. "It is getting late. Shouldn't you be heading home?"

"What if I want to stay a little longer?" Max challenged lazily.

Darin gave him one last piercing glare, decided it was not worth the argument, and turned on his heel, walking straight toward his own room.

Once Darin was out of earshot, Felicia looked at Max in amusement. "Did my brother do something to offend you?"

"He offends me on a regular basis," Max replied coolly. "I just rarely bother to hold it against him."
