Every year, when Anne’s birthday or any special holiday rolled around, Felicia would pick out a gift and have Luke bring it home for Anne. Luke always gave it to her as if it were from him. Anne never knew that the presents she got every year were really from her mom.

Felicia nodded and said, “Drive safe.”

“Sure.”

Luke got in his car and left. Felicia stood there for a while, watching until his car disappeared down the road, then she went back inside the villa.

It was almost six when Luke got back to the family’s old house.

When he walked into the living room, rhe grownups were watching TV, making sure the kids didn’t fight over their LEGO sets.

Rose glanced up when Luke came in. “Look who finally decided to show.”

Anne spotted him and jumped up, running straight for him. “Luke!” she yelled, grinning from ear to ear.

Luke bent down and scooped her up. As he hugged her, he noticed the little charm around her neck. He froze for a second, but then smiled at her. “Did you miss me, Anne?”

“I missed you!”

“I brought you a present. Want to see it?”

Anne’s eyes crinkled with excitement. “Yes!”

Luke set her down and handed her a gift bag. “Thank you,” she said, holding the bag close.

Just then, Max came down the stairs. When Anne saw her dad, she ran to show him the gift. Max sped up to meet her halfway.

“Daddy, look! Luke brought me a present!” She held up the bag so he could see.

Max bent down and took the bag from her. He looked at it for a second, then turned to Anne. “Did you remember to thank Luke?”

“I did, Daddy.”

He walked over, picked her up, and said, “Alright, Grandma is gonna help you with your bath first. You can play with it again later.”

Anne nodded and went with her grandmother without a fuss.

After Tatiana took Anne off for her bath, Max went back to his room. His eyes landed on the music box sitting on the coffee table. He picked it up and turned it over in his hands, noticing a line of Italian words engraved on the bottom. It was the brand name and a serial number. This music box was definitely custom-made.

Max pulled out his phone, snapped a quick photo, and sent it to Isaac, his assistant. “Find out who bought this music box.”

Isaac replied right away. “On it.”

That night, Tatiana had hoped Anne would sleep in her room, but Anne wouldn’t go. With a helpless sigh, Tatiana brought the little girl back to her dad.

Anne lay in bed, listening to the gentle music from her new music box as Max helped her drift off to sleep.

On Monday morning, Felicia was already at the financial center by seven, making sure everything was set up for the day’s big event.
