What were the odds she’d bump into him here? Sometimes it felt like the universe was just messing with her.
Max ordered a coffee and seemed to be waiting for someone, too. Felicia kept her eyes glued to her laptop, pretending he didn’t exist.
Her phone buzzed. It was Jeremy. “I’ll be there in about ten minutes,” he said.
“Okay,” Felicia replied, hanging up before heading to the restroom.
When she came back, she almost dropped her bag. Max was sitting right across from her, looking like he owned the place.
She stared at him, stunned for a second, then steadied herself. “Mr. Hawthorne, someone’s sitting here,” she reminded him, her voice cool but firm.
Max didn’t move. He just pulled out his phone and looked up at her, his tone all business. “What’s your number?”
Felicia’s eyes widened.
He added, in that cold, clipped way of his, “Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not interested in you. My daughter needs you—”
Felicia didn’t wait for him to finish. She picked up her coffee and tossed it right in his face.
The coffee splashed down his cheeks and neck, soaking into his shirt and leaving a big brown stain. His hair was plastered to his forehead.
Everyone nearby looked shocked, eyes wide.
Felicia grabbed her laptop and bag and walked out without looking back.
A waiter hurried over with a wet towel.
Felicia hadn’t gone far when she ran into someone coming her way. The guy wore a white T-shirt and light jeans, his vibe calm and understated, but there was something sharper in his eyes than she remembered from years ago.
She gave him a quick glance, then kept moving.
They headed for the exit, just as Jeremy walked in. He paused, surprised to see them, but quickly recovered and greeted them with an easy smile. “Mr. Hawthorne. Mr. Foxhall. Long time no see.”
“Yeah, it’s been a while. How’s everything?” Darin asked.
“All good,” Jeremy replied, nodding.
After a few quick greetings, they went their separate ways.
Jeremy walked into the lobby and spotted Felicia on the sofa. He crossed over and sat down across from her.
“I ordered you a coffee,” Felicia said, nodding toward the cup.
Jeremy took a sip and smiled. “Tastes great.” He set the cup down, glancing at her. “I just ran into Max.”
