Felicia had just called to say she was on the second floor, but now she was downstairs. Clearly,

Darin and Max had come down together.

Felicia just gave a quiet “mm” and left it at that, not in the mood to say more.

After cooling off, Felicia started to regret how things had gone when Max asked for her contact info. If she had handed over her number, Anne would be able to reach her. But Max’s sarcastic attitude from earlier still stung. Then again, Felicia knew that if she started talking to Anne more often, she might not be able to keep her feelings in check.

Jeremy noticed her mood had shifted and, guessing what was going on, didn’t ask any more questions. He just tried to distract her. “Check out the data I just finished,” he said, sliding his laptop over.

Felicia turned the screen toward him and, soon enough, they were deep in work talk. They had lunch together, and after that, around two, Felicia drove over to the TV station. She hosted a live show every Saturday night at eight.

That evening, Anne finished her bath, changed into her pajamas, then parked herself on the couch and asked her grandpa to put on her favorite channel. She’d been staying at her grandparents’ house for the past few days. Tatiana had canceled everything to be with her, and Max made a point to come home every night.

Brandon figured Anne wanted to watch cartoons. When she asked for the news, he couldn’t help but laugh. “Anne, you’re already watching the news? At your age?”

Tatiana came over with a bottle of milk and sat down next to Anne. Anne took it and drank quietly, snuggled up beside her grandmother. Tatiana stroked her hair, eyes full of love. “Anne’s a smart girl. She’s going to do amazing things one day, just watch.”

Later, after Anne was asleep, Brandon turned to Max. “Who’s Evelynn, the financial news anchor on XXTV? How does Anne know her?”

Max gave a short explanation. Tatiana still felt a twinge of worry, even though Anne had always been kept safe—nobody could just walk up and get close to her.

“Anne wants to invite her over for dinner,” Tatiana said. “Your father and I said yes for now. What do you think?”

When it came to Anne, they could never say no. If she wanted the moon, they’d try to get it for her. So when she made this request, Tatiana and Brandon just went along with it. For now, they agreed, hoping to keep their precious girl happy.
