Jeremy’s voice dropped, serious and low. “He still hasn’t signed the divorce papers. I doubt he’ll make things easy for you.”

Felicia sighed. “I know. There’s nothing I can do until the court date. We’ll just have to deal with it then.”

Jeremy nodded. “At least you’re heading out to Autumnridge for work. That should keep you from running into Max for a while.”

Felicia nodded again. Just thinking about seeing Max made her stomach twist. She wasn’t ready to deal with him, not now.

Later that afternoon, Felicia’s phone rang. It was the lawyer handling her fender bender. “Evelynn, Mr. Hawthorne isn’t just asking for repair costs. He’s demanding another twenty million in damages.”

Felicia clenched the phone so tightly her knuckles went white. “Tell him I’m not paying a single cent of that. He can sue me if he wants. I’m not backing down.”

She hung up, furious. For a second, she wanted to hurl her phone across the office. She managed to hold back, though, and just slammed it onto her desk instead. The anger churned in her chest, trapped with nowhere to go.

She changed into gym clothes and hit the treadmill downstairs, running five kilometers before she started to cool off. After a hot shower and a change of clothes, she went back upstairs and kept working.

It was ten by the time she finally packed up. Too late to go back to the villa. She grabbed her phone and purse, ready to call it a night, when a message from her daughter lit up the screen.

[Evelynn, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Get some rest, okay? I’m going to bed now.]

Anne had called an hour ago, asking if they could chat, but Felicia told her she was working late. Anne had been sweet about it, not making a fuss.

Reading the message now, Felicia felt her heart soften. Just like that, all the stress and frustration melted away. She texted back, [I will. Thank you, Anne. Goodnight.]

Felicia let it go, not in the mood to dig.

She had just made it to her office when Savannah stormed in, fuming. “Felicia, did you see what’s happening on the forum?”

Felicia frowned. “What’s going on?”

Savannah shoved her phone over. “Look at this. Some troll is out there spreading disgusting rumors.”

Felicia took the phone. It was a finance forum, and someone had posted about her, tagging her name right in the headline. The title was brutal. Evelynn, the host from the recent financial summit, slept her way to the top. So much for beauty and brains, she’s just filthy.

Below was a photo of her at the summit, snapped from a sneaky angle. She was talking to a man, but her face had clearly been edited to look like she was giving him a flirty, almost desperate smile. Everyone else in the background was blurred out, making her “seductive” expression the only thing you could see.
