A soft knock echoed through the hospital room.

“Come in,” Jeremy called.

Grady stepped inside, her voice respectful. “Mr. Milman. Evelynn.”

Everyone assumed Grady was one of Jett’s people, but in truth, he was Jeremy’s plant, keeping an eye on Jett for years. Jeremy had always been suspicious, but without solid evidence, he let Jett’s shady deals slide, pretending not to notice. Jett, for his part, thought he was untouchable, convinced no one saw through him.

Grady was the one quietly passing information to Felicia, including Jett’s secret meetings with people from BlueMarble Investments.

Jeremy asked, “What’s going on with Jett?”

“He was supposed to have dinner with Simon tonight,” Grady explained. “But it got canceled. Mr. Hawthorne from BlueMarble is coming to Autumnridge today, so the plans changed last minute.”

Suddenly, a phone vibrated from Felicia’s bag on the sofa.

Jeremy walked over and pulled out her phone. He checked the screen and handed it to her.

Felicia saw the caller ID. It was Anne, calling from her smartwatch.

She took a deep breath, steadied herself, and answered.

Jeremy and Grady stepped out, leaving her in peace.

Anne’s voice was urgent through the line. “Evelynn!”

“Anne, what’s wrong?” Felicia tried to sound normal, but her weakness slipped through.

“Daddy said you got hurt. Are you at the hospital?” Anne sounded close to tears.

Felicia paused, caught off guard, but realized it wasn’t surprising that BlueMarble’s people knew what happened.

“I’m okay, Anne, really. You don’t need to worry.”

Anne was persistent. “Daddy and I are at Autumnridge. I want to see you.”

Felicia couldn’t say no. Her daughter’s worry tugged at her heart. She checked the hospital sign and told Anne where to find her.

After she hung up, Jeremy returned. “Your daughter knows you’re here?”

The door opened. The first thing Felicia saw was a tall man’s silhouette. Then, a little figure dashed forward and ran straight to her bedside.

“Evelynn!”

Anne wore a cute dress with a pearl belt and a tiny pink diamond necklace. Her small backpack bounced as she hurried over. She stopped at Felicia’s side, eyes wide with worry as she saw the bandage on her head.

“Does it hurt? Do you want me to blow on it?” Anne asked, her voice tiny and sincere.

Felicia looked at her daughter, and for a moment, all the pain in her head faded away. She reached out, gently smoothing Anne’s hair. “It doesn’t hurt, sweetheart. You don’t have to worry. I’ll be okay really soon.”

“Okay,” Anne replied quietly.

She glanced back at her dad, then walked over and took the bag from his hand. “Let me give it to her, Daddy.”

Felicia looked up and met Max’s eyes at the end of her bed. He stood there, calm and unreadable, his handsome features still as stone.

Their eyes met for just a moment, then Felicia looked away, her face carefully blank.
