Anne set the bag down on the bed, her eyes bright with excitement. “Evelynn, I made you a little cake.”
Felicia blinked, caught off guard by the sweetness. “You made this for me?”
Anne nodded, practically bouncing in place. “Try it, please.”
A rush of emotion filled Felicia’s chest. She hadn’t been there for her daughter at all these past five years. Yet Anne was so close, so full of warmth and trust. The gratitude in her heart tangled with something sharper, a deep well of guilt.
She steadied herself and reached for the bag, pulling out a small box. Inside was a cake, clearly homemade, its shape lopsided and charming in its imperfection.
Felicia opened the box, scooped up a bit with the spoon, and tasted it. The cake was sweet but not too much, the flavor surprisingly good. She smiled at Anne. “It’s delicious. You did such a great job.”
Anne’s whole face lit up, dimples appearing as she grinned at the praise.
Felicia offered her a spoonful in return. Anne leaned closer, took a bite, and they shared a quiet moment, the air around them soft and full of happiness.
For a little while, Felicia forgot there was anyone else in the room.
Off to the side, Max watched in silence. His expression was hard to read, his eyes shadowed and distant.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed, shattering the peaceful moment.
Felicia tensed and glanced up at him.
She watched his back as Max stepped out to take the call, her mind uneasy. Would he suspect anything? She honestly didn’t know.
When Max came back, he spoke to Anne. “Anne, it’s time to go.”
Even if moments like this were fleeting, Felicia felt like it was enough. She would hold onto this happiness for as long as she could.
When evening came, a nurse stopped by to tell Felicia that Mason was awake at last. Tommy was sitting with him, and Felicia finally let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding.
She and Anne were eating dinner when Jeremy arrived.
He didn’t look surprised to see Anne there. The bodyguard outside must have given it away.
Felicia glanced up. “Have you had dinner yet?”
Jeremy nodded. “Yeah.”
