Felicia and Ava made their way back to Highfield Manor. Felicia slipped into fresh clothes and dabbed on a little makeup. No matter what she wore, she still felt ordinary and a bit frumpy, but at least she now looked more awake and put together.
It was just after five when Greg arrived home. He offered to drive her to The Willow Bistro, a place known for its signature dishes. The restaurant stood alone, its classic architecture and peaceful vibe drawing in the city’s best and brightest.
“Thank you, Greg,” Felicia told him as they pulled up.
“Call me if you need anything,” he replied.
“I will.”
Felicia stepped inside and called Jeremy to let him know she’d arrived. He and his party were still on their way. After checking her reservation, a staff member guided her to a private room Jeremy had booked, and brought her some juice and snacks. Felicia settled in to wait.
About twenty minutes later, Jeremy arrived with Professor Michael and his assistant. The professor looked to be in his fifties, but he was remarkably well kept, with the kind of polished, gentlemanly air that made him seem almost regal.
Felicia stood to greet him. Michael noticed she was pregnant and gave her a gentle handshake before urging her to sit down and relax.
Everyone took their seats, and the waiter handed out menus.
Once they’d ordered, the conversation moved from the Capital’s food and culture to more serious topics. They talked about the academic exchange earlier that day. Felicia listened closely and offered her thoughts when it felt right. Jeremy must have told Professor Michael about her in advance, because the professor started asking her questions, clearly wanting to get a sense of her abilities. Felicia answered confidently and professionally.
Michael nodded along, clearly impressed.
“She is remarkable,” he told Jeremy. “I look forward to seeing her at Stanford.”
Jeremy grinned. “I’m sure she’ll be one of your best students.”
They all raised their glasses. The others had wine, but Felicia sipped her juice. The mood was relaxed and friendly.
“Are you here with Professor Michael?”
“Seems you’re well connected.”
Andrea noticed Jeremy hadn’t looked at her once. She chimed in, “Max, is this Mr. Milman from Roen Capital, the one you mentioned to Darin?”
“Yes, that’s him,” Max replied, his tone easy.
Andrea smiled at Jeremy. “I’ve heard so much about you, Mr. Milman. It’s great to finally meet you. You really live up to your reputation.” She introduced herself, “I’m Andrea, Max’s girlfriend.”
She kept her eyes on Jeremy, searching his face for any sign of a reaction.
