“You…” Felicia felt her breath catch. “What do you even want?”
Max turned around and walked straight up to her.
Before Felicia could react, his hand clamped around her wrist.
“Max… what are you—”
He yanked her, sending her tumbling onto the sofa. His presence crashed over her, cold and overwhelming, making her whole body tense up.
She stared at him, eyes wide with fear, as he leaned in close. His hand gripped her chin, forcing her to look up at him.
His expression was icy.
“Why am I treating you like this?” he echoed, letting out a bitter laugh. “You got yourself tangled with someone you never should have. That’s all the reason I need.”
Felicia stayed tense, watching him carefully.
“Who do you want to be with now?” His voice was biting.
Felicia’s chest heaved. She tried to slap him, but he caught her hand easily, pinning her arms against the back of the sofa.
“Felicia, I’m not that patient.”
She struggled, glaring at him. “You’re such a jerk, Max.”
He stared right back, his voice low and harsh. “This is your warning. Anything that belongs to Anne is off limits. Anyone who tries to take it, I’ll make sure they’re gone. For good.”
His words were so cold and threatening, Felicia felt like it was hard to breathe.
They locked eyes.
For a moment, everything went silent. The tension in the room was thick enough to touch.
Felicia kept staring at him. Then she suddenly laughed—a sharp, mocking sound. “Do you really love Anne, Max? Do you even know what that means?”
He just stared at her, silent.
“If you love her, why do you act so close with Andrea right in front of her? You expect Anne to just accept it? She’s not stupid. She knows who’s real with her and who’s just pretending. She can see right through Andrea’s fake act.”
“Daddy, please don’t fight with Evelynn. I… I don’t want you to fight.”
Felicia sat frozen, helpless. Anne’s sobs felt like they were tearing her heart apart.
Max shot Felicia a cold look, then carried Anne out of the room.
Anne’s crying faded down the hallway.
Felicia sat there, numb, her heart heavy.
She had no idea how long she stayed like that.
Suddenly, Anne ran back into the study.
Felicia stood up quickly, went to her, and knelt down to pull her close. Anne’s eyes were swollen and red.
“I’m so sorry,” Felicia whispered, her voice raw.
Anne hugged her tight, still sniffling. “Evelynn, please don’t fight with Daddy, okay? I just want you to get along.”
