Anne didn’t notice a thing about the tension simmering between the other two.

“Daddy, do you like it?” Anne asked, all hopeful.

Max shrugged. “It could be better.”

Felicia clenched her fork, fighting the urge to splash the soup in her bowl right at his smug face.

Anne’s eyes went wide as she stared at her dad. She piped up right away, “Daddy, you’re supposed to say it’s really yummy!”

Max gave in easily. “You’re right. It’s really yummy.”

Anne let out a little huff. “Next time, you have to cook.”

Just then, the nanny came down the stairs with Felicia’s phone.

Felicia had left it in the bedroom.

“Someone just called for you,” the nanny said.

Felicia took her phone and saw a missed call from Gavin.

The phone started buzzing again.

Felicia stood up quickly and answered. “Gavin?”

Anne watched Felicia as she left the room. Max nudged her. “Anne, finish your breakfast.”

Anne turned her attention back to her plate.

A few minutes later, Felicia came back to the dining room.

After breakfast, they got ready to head out.

On the way home, Anne was practically bouncing with excitement. She was going to Evelynn’s house today.

The car had just entered the city when Max’s phone rang. Felicia couldn’t hear what the other person was saying, but she could tell it was Andrea’s voice.

Max just said, “I’ll be there soon.”

When he hung up, Anne asked, “Daddy, where are you going?”

Max looked at her in the rearview mirror. “I’ve got something to take care of. I’ll drop you both off first.”

Anne just nodded. “Okay.”

Max dropped Anne and Felicia at Oakridge Estate and turned to Felicia. “A driver will take you later. Take care of Anne.”

Right then, the driver pulled up to the door. Clearly, Max had already given the okay.

Felicia ignored the maids and started to leave with Anne. Suddenly, another car pulled up outside.

Tatiana stepped out.

“Grandma,” Anne called out.

Tatiana’s expression turned icy when she saw Felicia, but she managed to pull herself together before reaching Anne. “Anne, where are you off to?”

“I’m going to play at Evelynn’s house today,” Anne said.

Tatiana looked stunned. “Where’s your dad?”

“Daddy’s busy. He said I could go.”

Tatiana just couldn’t wrap her head around it. Why would her son let Anne visit a stranger’s house?

She shot Felicia a chilly look, then turned back to Anne. “Anne, you’re not going today. Your great-grandma isn’t feeling well. Let’s go see her first, okay?”

Felicia’s face fell the second she heard that.
