“Great-grandma’s sick?” Anne’s face scrunched up with worry.

“Yeah.”

Anne pressed her lips together, clearly torn. She wanted to go to Evelynn’s house, but her mind kept drifting back to her great-grandmother.

She turned to Felicia. “Evelynn, can we go see Great-grandma together? Maybe after we visit her, we can still go to your place?”

Tatiana shot Felicia a sharp look, full of warning.

Felicia noticed right away. She just smiled gently at Anne. “Of course, sweetie.”

Tatiana’s face darkened.

“Yay!” Anne grinned, spinning back to her grandma. “Then let’s hurry and get in the car. I want to see Great-grandma.”

By the time Tatiana looked at her granddaughter again, she’d already smoothed out her expression.

Felicia really didn’t feel like going, but she couldn’t stand the way Tatiana acted.

About half an hour later, the car pulled up in front of the Hawthorne family’s old estate.

“Evelynn, I’ll be right back soon,” Tatiana said as she took Anne’s hand and headed inside.

Left alone in the car, Felicia suddenly felt restless, almost uncomfortable in her own skin. She let out a short, bitter laugh. What was the point of pushing back at Tatiana like this? It only made things harder.

After about ten minutes, she saw Luke walking over.

She pushed open the car door and called out, “Luke!”

Luke looked up, surprised to see her. He walked over quickly. “Felicia, what are you doing here?”

Felicia gave a tired half-smile. “Waiting for Anne.”

Luke had just seen Tatiana bring Anne inside.

He looked confused, so Felicia explained. “I was about to take Anne to my place, but Tatiana showed up and said Miranda was sick.”

Luke nodded in understanding. “She just had a cold yesterday. She’s already feeling a lot better. Wait, you were going to take Anne home with you? Did Max say that’s okay?”

Felicia nodded.

Luke headed back inside.

Felicia waited, pacing a little.

Ten minutes later, Luke came out with Anne, the butler trailing behind.

Felicia walked up to them.

Anne rushed over. “Evelynn, are you leaving?”

Felicia knelt down so she was eye-level with Anne. “Yeah, honey. My dad’s in the hospital, so I need to go see him.”

Anne nodded, her eyes downcast. “Okay. Great-grandma and Great-grandpa aren’t feeling well, so they want me to stay here with them.”

She sounded sad, but Felicia could tell she didn’t want to upset her great-grandparents either.

Felicia’s heart ached a little for her daughter. Anne was such a thoughtful, gentle kid.

“It’s alright, Anne. You’ll have plenty of chances to come to my house. I’ll get everything ready for you and wait until you can visit.”
