Max went quiet for a moment, then asked, “So, what are you up to now, Anne?”

“Evelynn just dropped me off for my piano lesson. It’s her mom’s birthday today,” Anne replied.

“Alright,” Max said. “You focus on your lesson for now.”

Anne hesitated. “But what about Evelynn? What if someone hurt her again?”

“We’ll talk about it when I get home, okay?”

Anne grumbled a little. “Okay, but when are you coming back, Daddy?”

“In a few days,” Max promised.

They chatted for a bit longer until Max managed to calm her down. Anne’s piano lesson was set to finish at two forty, and while she was in class, Felicia took advantage of the break to review some documents.

“I know, Mom. I have things to take care of, so I’ll go now.”

Hearing the impatience in his voice, Yvonne let out a long sigh.
