Jeremy paused, fingers hovering over the keyboard, and glanced at Heather. “So, what do you want?”
Heather shrugged. “I haven’t figured that out yet.”
“Whenever you do, just let me know.”
“Alright.”
She lingered, not making a move to leave. Jeremy raised an eyebrow. “Anything else?”
Heather tipped her chin up, her eyes sharp and knowing. “Come on, Jeremy, if you’ve got something to ask, just spit it out. Why are you acting like a stranger with me?”
Jeremy let out a tired, small laugh. He pulled off his glasses and leaned back, rubbing the corners of his eyes before looking at her again. “What did you say to Felicia?”
Heather told him everything, not leaving anything out.
Jeremy nodded. “I figured.”
Heather smirked. “You really do know Felicia well.”
Jeremy said, “If Max had ever shown Felicia even the slightest bit of kindness, she wouldn’t be this determined now.”
Heather didn’t know exactly what Felicia had been through, but she could tell Max wasn’t someone who felt much for others. He was always polite, and he even smiled when he looked at Felicia, but there was something cold behind that smile that made her uneasy.
“Felicia must be hurting a lot right now,” Heather said softly, worry clouding her expression.
The room fell quiet for a moment.
Then Heather grinned. “This is when Felicia needs someone the most, you know.”
Jeremy looked at her and shook his head. “Alright, that’s enough. Go get some rest.”
She didn’t ask anything else, but as she looked at her daughter, her eyes softened with a new wave of affection.
Anne looked up at Felicia and said, “Daddy takes me to see Grandpa Dodson a lot. Daddy says if it weren’t for Grandpa Dodson, he wouldn’t even be able to see me now.”
Felicia felt her chest tighten with a sudden pang of fear. She had never known about Anne’s heart condition. Luke had never mentioned it, probably because he didn’t want her to worry.
After breakfast, Max drove them to an old apartment complex downtown.
When they arrived, Max parked outside. Felicia helped Anne out of the car while Max grabbed a gift from the trunk.
Seeing Felicia carrying Anne, Max came over. “You take the gift. I’ll carry Anne.”
Even though Felicia had only just become Anne’s mom temporarily, Anne clung to her as if she’d always been there. She was getting big, already about four feet tall, and Felicia couldn’t hold her for long.
