Felicia glared up at him, her patience wearing thin. “Max, are you out of your mind?” She wanted to smack him, but her hand was scraped and bleeding, so she clenched her fist and held herself back.
Max’s eyes flicked down to the blood on her palm, then back to her furious face. His voice was steady, almost bored. “If you just listened to me, you wouldn’t have to go through all this.”
Felicia was so angry she could scream. “Why should I listen to you? I’m hurt because you can’t control yourself.”
A black sedan rolled up to the curb. The driver stepped out and opened the door.
Without a word, Max scooped her up and set her in the back seat. He buckled her in, then bent down to pick up her broken phone from the ground before getting in beside her.
The car pulled away from the estate as lights started glowing in the windows behind them.
Felicia stared down at her phone, its screen shattered. Right before it hit the ground, she’d seen Jeremy’s name pop up. Now the phone was dead, and she couldn’t call him back. Her palm throbbed, and both her knees were aching with sharp little pains.
Suddenly, Max’s phone lit up with a video call. He answered it.
“Daddy!” Anne’s bright voice filled the car.
“Did you have breakfast?” Max asked. It was just after eight in the morning back home.
“I did. Daddy, is someone there with you?” Anne peered at the screen.
Max shifted the phone, angling it so Anne could see Felicia.
“Evelynn!” Anne’s face lit up. She was grinning from ear to ear.
Felicia turned, still trying to hide how upset she was.
“Evelynn, what’s wrong? You look sad. Did Daddy upset you again?”
Felicia couldn’t think of anything to say.
Anne’s smile faded. She glared at her dad through the screen. “Daddy, why are you always mean to Evelynn?”
Finally, Felicia turned to him, her voice icy. “Where are you taking me?”
Max didn’t look at her. “You’ll see when we get there.”
Felicia took a slow, steady breath. “Max, I don’t mean anything to you. We can just go back to being strangers.”
He glanced at her, a humorless half-smile on his lips. “Strangers? Then why did you ask for a divorce?”
She let out a cold laugh. “In your eyes, were we ever really married?”
Max just stared at her, silent for a moment. Then he turned away and said nothing.
Felicia gave a bitter little laugh.
Suddenly, Max’s phone vibrated. He looked at the screen, saw Holden’s name, and answered. “Yeah?”
