Holden’s voice came through the phone. “Max, where did you go? I haven’t seen you anywhere.”
“Something came up. I left early,” Max said.
“Did you hear about the power outage just now?”
“Nope.”
“I saw Gavin with Eleanor, then Evelynn disappeared.”
Max sounded completely unfazed. “She disappeared. What’s that got to do with me?”
“I saw Jeremy looking for her. He looked worried.”
“You’re keeping a close eye on Jeremy. Don’t tell me you’re interested in him too.”
Holden let out a low laugh. His tone was teasing. “You left, and Evelynn vanishes right after. Funny, don’t you think?”
Max’s expression didn’t change. “That is a coincidence.”
“Yeah, a real one. If you find out where she is, you’d better tell me right away.”
“I’m not your personal search party. If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.”
He ended the call.
An hour later, the car pulled up in front of a gorgeous villa on the Upper East Side.
The driver got out and opened the door.
Max walked around to the other side and found Felicia still sitting there, refusing to budge. She turned her face away, pretending not to notice him.
He leaned in, slid his arms under her, and lifted her out of the car.
Felicia stiffened, her whole body resisting. “What are you doing…”
He looked right at her. “Want to try walking instead?”
She barely managed to keep her face steady, but the pain in her ankle was impossible to ignore. Her knee throbbed, but her ankle felt even worse now.
She shot him a glare. “Mind your own business.”
Before Felicia could react, there was a sharp crack.
She yelped in pain, breaking out in a cold sweat. It felt like her ankle was being twisted in two.
Max’s voice was calm. “All done.”
She was still catching her breath when he started rubbing ointment on her ankle. Then he told the maid to bring over some slippers.
Felicia glared at him, certain he’d done it on purpose. She snatched a pillow from the sofa and threw it at him.
Max caught it with one hand and set it aside. “From now on, you’re staying here.”
She crossed her arms, refusing to back down. “Says who? I don’t have to do what you say.”
Max’s eyes darkened as he looked at her. His voice was firm. “You’re staying here until you leave the country. That’s not up for discussion.”
