“Evelynn, aren’t Daddy’s flowers pretty? I picked them out myself.”
Felicia blinked, pulled from her thoughts, and glanced at the bouquet of roses in Max’s hand.
Since she’d stayed at Max’s place before, Anne had always assumed they lived together. Even after finding out that wasn’t true, she still didn’t quite get it. Last night, when Felicia had asked for her help. Anne had decided her dad must have done something to upset Evelynn, and the only way to fix it was for him to apologize with flowers.
Felicia stayed quiet, so Anne pressed, “Evelynn, you don’t like them?”
Felicia looked at Anne on the video call and said, “Anne, I need to talk to your dad for a bit. I’ll call you back later, okay?”
“Alright!”
Felicia hung up and faced Max. “You should take these back. And I really think you need to explain things to Anne.”
She could tell Anne just wanted to play matchmaker. Max had to know it, too.
“She’s being stubborn. How exactly am I supposed to explain?”
Felicia had already told Anne, over and over, that there was nothing going on between her and Max. But Anne had her own way of thinking. She kept saying, “But you and Daddy lived together.”
Felicia had tried to clear things up, and Anne seemed to get it at the time, but now it was obvious she hadn’t really listened.
Max might be overbearing, but even he couldn’t control Anne. In a lot of ways, she was just like him.
“You should just go home today. I’ll talk to Anne again soon.”
Max shrugged. “I brought the flowers, so you need to deal with them however you want.”
Felicia looked at him for a second, then finally took the bouquet from his hands.
“Are you done here?” Max asked.
Felicia turned to leave, but his words made her pause. She glanced back at him. “I still have a few things to handle.”
He looked at her, serious. “Don’t get involved in things that aren’t your business.”
The photos were sent straight to Holden.
When Holden saw them, a cold little smile tugged at his lips. “Max is such a liar.”
Trey, sitting beside him, looked over. “What do you mean?”
Holden handed him the phone.
Trey stared at the photo, disbelief written all over his face. “Max, bringing roses to a girl himself? But I heard he’s already seeing someone else.”
Holden’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “Do you really think he’s the loyal type? Both Jeremy and Max seem to care about her now. Looks like she’s the one we need to keep an eye on.”
Trey frowned, thoughtful. “We should be careful. Max doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who’d put a girl before his own interests.”
A sly glint flashed in Holden’s eyes. “We’ll see for ourselves when the time comes.”
