Yvonne tried to pull herself together, offering a small, reassuring smile. “I’m fine. Let’s go,” she said. Rose didn’t press her for more.
Once they were both in the car, Yvonne glanced over. “Was that Luke’s girlfriend just now?”
It made sense that Yvonne didn’t know who Felicia was. Even the Hawthrone family hadn’t recognized her at first.
“No, just a friend of Luke’s,” Rose replied, keeping it simple.
Yvonne looked thoughtful. “Oh. I saw them walking in together and honestly thought they were a couple. They looked good side by side.”
Rose just smiled, letting the comment slide. But Yvonne’s words lingered with her. She worried about Luke’s future all the time. He was almost thirty, and still single. Every time she brought up marriage, Luke would get annoyed. If she asked whether he had someone on his mind, he shut down completely, as if he had no plans to ever settle down.
She thought back to how close Luke and Felicia seemed at the Gilbert family party, and the way he’d looked at her just now. The memory made her frown, and she didn’t want to think about it anymore.
After Luke finished his check-up, they grabbed lunch together. Later, when Luke was back at the office, his phone rang. It was his mom.
“Luke, come home for dinner tonight.”
“I might have to work late, Mom. Is something wrong?” He could already tell she had something on her mind.
Rose sighed. “You’re always working. You should start thinking about your future, you know…”
“Okay, Mom, that’s enough.” Luke cut her off, his tone gentle but firm. “I know what I’m doing. Please don’t push. I’m really busy right now. If there’s nothing else, I need to go.”
He hung up before she could say more.
Heather’s eyes widened. “I only found out later. I told Yara not to talk to Trey about me. How do you know? Did you see Trey? He didn’t do anything, did he?”
Heather didn’t know that Holden was out of prison. Jeremy had kept it from her so she wouldn’t worry.
“I’m fine, really. Nothing happened. But I’m pretty sure Trey still has feelings for you.”
Heather rolled her eyes. “He’s just like his brother. Can’t keep his feelings straight. I don’t want anything from him. He’s not worth it.”
She’d been fooled by Trey for years. Now that she was with Greg, she finally understood what a good man was like.
Felicia wasn’t too worried about Trey coming back. Here, he wouldn’t dare try anything.
