“Mom, Anne’s really mean to her dad,” Yara said quietly.

Heather smiled and patted her daughter’s hair. “Don’t worry, honey. Anne just acts tough with her dad. She’s always sweet with you.”

Yara nodded, satisfied.

“Come on, let’s head over there,” Heather called to her brother, pulling her attention away from the group and moving forward.

Not too far away, someone was watching them closely. It was Alyza. Ever since Anne had hit her kid Jack, everything had felt upside down. Jack’s family had ended up going to Max’s place to apologize, and Jack got switched to a different class. Alyza still couldn’t get over it. Her kid was the one who got hit, so why did they have to apologize? But since they were facing Max, she had no choice. What really stung, though, was the slap she’d gotten from that bitch. That, she couldn’t forget.

Her phone buzzed. Alyza glanced at the screen, said a quick word to the nanny, and walked to a quieter spot to answer. “Hi, Trey.”

Trey was her cousin.

Trey got straight to the point. “Who’s with Yara at the school event today?”

“Heather and her brother,” Alyza answered. She had only met Heather once, at her wedding to Trey. After that, Heather moved to New York, so they weren’t close at all. Alyza just knew Heather had a daughter, but they hardly ever met. It was only later that Alyza realized Heather’s kid was the one who’d gotten into the fight with Jack.

Alyza didn’t keep in touch with Trey much either. She’d only heard about Trey and Heather’s messy divorce from family gossip, which she honestly didn’t care about. After Mrs. McCoy’s birthday, Trey and Holden’s parents came back from overseas, and Alyza couldn’t help mentioning that Yara hit Jack. Trey found out and called her, sounding pretty upset. “Your kid hit Yara?”

Alyza had been so nervous she just told him everything. Trey had someone look into it and found out the other girl was Anne Hawthrone. Jack’s family hadn’t dared make a scene. He suspected something, and Alyza confirmed it was Max’s daughter.

Trey had been shocked. Max had a daughter? Alyza didn’t know who the mom was, or if Max was even married. Since Max was dating Andrea, she figured maybe the kid was from some fling. Still, it was obvious Max adored this child.

Felicia grinned. “Let me try.”

Anne squealed, clapping her hands. “Yay! Evelynn and I are a team!”

While the game played out, Max stood nearby, filming everything on his camera. The challenge was all about balance, but Felicia and Anne worked together perfectly and easily took first place.

“Daddy, we won first place!” Anne cheered, her face glowing.

Felicia looked at her daughter with so much love. When she glanced over and met Max’s eyes, that soft warmth in her gaze still lingered.
