Jeremy and Felicia stepped into Nate’s hospital room and found him looking better than they’d expected. He had just finished his IV and Wyatt was already there, sitting by his side.
They all greeted each other. Nate seemed to be in a good mood. “You made it.”
He already knew they were dropping by. “Felicia, it’s perfect you came. Do you mind reading me the newspaper?”
Wyatt grinned. “Grandpa, I’m sitting right here. Why don’t you let me read to you?”
Nate frowned. “Nobody wants to hear your rough voice first thing in the morning.”
Wyatt raised his hands in defeat. “Alright, alright, I get it. I’m rough.”
Felicia and Jeremy couldn’t help but laugh. Felicia walked over, took the newspaper from Nate, and asked, “Where should I start?”
Nate pointed to a spot and Felicia settled herself on the stool beside him. She started reading aloud in a clear, steady voice that filled the quiet room. Jeremy and Wyatt slipped out onto the balcony, leaving Nate to listen in peace.
About ten minutes later, Felicia finished the article. Jeremy and Wyatt came back inside, and Nate asked them about work and what they’d been up to lately. The conversation drifted, easy and light, until Nate turned to Felicia with a more serious look.
“So, how are things going with you and Max?”
Felicia let out a helpless sigh. “He won’t divorce me. He says it’s because of Anne.”
Nate scoffed. “Now he remembers he’s a father? Where was all this concern before? The Hawthorne family never taught him right. If he’d grown up in the Gilbert family, I would’ve straightened him out myself.”
Wyatt shifted in his seat, looking a little nervous. “Grandpa, take it easy. Getting upset isn’t good for you. I’ll talk to him. Don’t worry.”
Nate shook his head. “You should spend less time with him. I don’t want you picking up his bad habits.”
Wyatt grinned. “With you watching over me, Grandpa, I couldn’t go wrong even if I tried.”
He noticed them looking and turned his head.
“What’s happening?” Nate called from behind.
Wyatt answered quickly. “Nothing, Grandpa. Probably just some family drama in another room.”
Jeremy and Felicia said goodbye to Wyatt and started walking down the hall. As they passed, Andrea straightened up and spotted them. The second she saw Felicia, her fingers curled into fists and her eyes, red from crying, flashed with a hatred she couldn’t hide.
Max heard footsteps and glanced over his shoulder. Felicia was mostly hidden behind Jeremy as they walked straight ahead, not stopping or saying a word.
They disappeared around the corner, heading for the elevator.
“Max!” Andrea choked out, her voice thick with tears.
