Felicia had been back for quite a while now. Everyone in the Hawthorne family knew who she really was, but still, no one brought up the idea of inviting her over for dinner.
On the phone, Rose said, “It’s really nothing. I just want to invite her to the house for a meal. If she doesn’t want to come, I won’t push her.”
Luke answered, “If it’s just a dinner, that’s fine.”
Rose could hear something in his voice. “Luke, what are you trying to say? Do you think I’d do something to Felicia?”
There was a pause. The silence seemed to stretch.
“Luke?” Rose finally asked.
Luke’s voice was steady but serious. “Mom, I just want you to promise you’ll always be on my side.”
Rose hesitated as the truth started to click. “Luke, be honest with me. Is Felicia the reason you’ve never thought about getting married? Do you have feelings for her?”
His voice dropped lower. “Mom, I really don’t think I could love anyone else but Felicia.”
Rose had sort of guessed it already. “Even if she and Max get divorced, she’s still Anne’s mom. That won’t change.”
“I know, but I can’t just give up on her.”
Rose let out a slow sigh. Her tone turned heavy. “And what if Max never divorces her? Are you really willing to wait that long?”
Luke went quiet for a second. “Felicia will divorce him. I know she will.”
Listening to her son, Rose suddenly didn’t know what else to say. She knew what kind of person he was. Ever since he was little, Luke had his own mind and chased what he wanted, no matter how hard it was. The men in the Hawthorne family were all like that.
Felicia glanced at Savannah. She looked tense. Once upon a time, she and Darin had been engaged, but now they barely spoke.
“Mr. Foxhall,” Felicia replied, her tone all business. She didn’t have a high opinion of Darin.
The guy from Horizon Biotech, Mr. Evans, noticed the greetings and smiled. “So, you all know each other.”
Felicia and Savannah didn’t stick around. They got straight in the elevator and headed upstairs. They were here to sort out some capital management issues, mostly because there had been a weird blip in the company’s market valuation. Roen Capital would handle it fast. Next up, they had to plan out the finances again based on the latest asset data.
Two hours later, the meeting wrapped up.
Savannah couldn’t help but ask, “So, what kind of partnership was Mr. Foxhall talking about with your company today?”
