Yvonne watched the two of them sitting side by side, and a heavy feeling settled in her chest.

Amber slid into the seat next to Felicia. She’d seen what happened earlier, even if she hadn’t caught the exact words between Andrea and Amber. Still, with the way the air felt charged, it couldn’t have been anything good.

“Evelynn, it’s been forever. What have you been up to lately?”

Felicia and Amber started to chat.

“Where are Mandy and Anne?” Felicia asked.

Amber smiled. “The kids stuffed themselves at lunch, so Kate’s over in the playroom keeping an eye on them.”

Kate was Daniel’s wife.

Felicia nodded, glancing briefly at Wyatt and Luke, who were laughing quietly nearby.

“This is actually my first time meeting Andrea,” Amber said, her voice casual but curious. “She really is gorgeous.” She paused and grinned at Felicia. “But honestly, she doesn’t hold a candle to you, Evelynn.”

Felicia just gave a small, amused smile. “I’d rather not be compared to her. Feels like bad luck, you know?”

Amber’s eyes widened a little. “Sorry, that was out of line.”

“It’s okay,” Felicia said softly.

Amber leaned in, lowering her voice. “But I don’t get it. Aside from her looks, what does Andrea even have that Max cares about?”

Felicia’s lips curled into a knowing smile. “Sometimes a pretty face is all it takes.”

A man that smart didn’t need someone who could keep up with him. What he wanted was someone pretty who’d just do as he said, no questions asked.

Lunch was served, and the room buzzed with quiet conversations. Felicia found herself glancing at the main table every so often, lost in her own thoughts.

“Are you sure she knows?” Amber asked again.

Felicia nodded. “She knows.”

Amber’s mouth twisted into a smirk. “That’s bold. She knows who you are, and she still drags her daughter around, trying to make her the other woman.”

Wyatt reached over and put some food on Amber’s plate. “Come on, babe, let’s just eat. Don’t let it get to you.”

Amber shot him a look. “You should keep your distance from people like that. The stuff they pull is just… gross.”

Amber never really had strong feelings about Max before, but the fact that he brought Andrea to the birthday party today really crossed a line.

Even if everyone else was clueless, Max knew exactly who Felicia was.
