Yara was spending more and more time with her dad these days. Heather couldn’t help worrying. If things kept going like this, how would Yara ever warm up to Greg in the future? Men and women were just different. A woman could never be as detached as a man. No matter what, kids would always be a woman’s biggest worry.
“He can’t stay here forever, you know,” Felicia said. “He’ll have to leave eventually. Or, when Yara is feeling better, you could just bring her back to Northwick.”
Heather nodded. “That’s true. It’d be nice to take Yara home for New Year’s and spend some time with my parents. But honestly, Greg’s been so busy lately... and you have, too.”
Sometimes Heather messaged Felicia and waited ages for a reply.
“It’s just that time of year,” Felicia replied. “You’re the one living the easy life.”
Heather laughed. “Me? I’m just a couch potato with no ambition. I can’t compete with you.”
They chatted for a while before saying goodbye.
After the call, Max walked over. “Were you thinking of inviting Yara over to play today?”
Felicia glanced at him. He actually seemed relaxed for once, not locked away in his study with work. Anne wanted her dad to cook, so he’d gone into the kitchen. Now he was wearing a black apron over his black cashmere sweater, looking surprisingly like a family man.
Felicia looked away. “Yara’s sick too. She’s resting at home.”
“Alright. They can hang out when they’re both feeling better. Let’s eat.”
After lunch, Anne went down for her nap.
Felicia decided to visit the hospital. She turned to Max. “You’re coming with me.”
Max just smiled. “Sure.”
They headed down to the garage. Max walked over and opened the back door for Felicia. She slid in, and he got in on the other side.
Tatiana couldn’t keep quiet. “Felicia, that’s out of line.”
Felicia turned to her, smirking. “Mrs. Hawthorne, Miss Curtis isn’t your daughter-in-law, is she? You sure seem protective.”
Tatiana’s face went stiff. “Felicia!”
Felicia didn’t even blink. “Too bad, right? You like her so much, but your son still won’t marry her. Not that I blame him. You’ve never been the best judge of character. I mean, Andrea’s all looks and no brains, and you actually approve? No wonder your son takes after you. Clearly, bad judgment runs in the family.”
Tatiana stared at her, speechless. She was too dignified to start yelling in public.
Andrea stared at Felicia in disbelief. She’d just insulted Max too, but what really stung was seeing Max sit there, completely unmoved.
Yvonne took in her daughter’s bold attitude, remembering how she’d always been this way, even when she was little.
