This was always who Felicia was underneath it all. After that serious illness years ago, she’d turned quieter and more unsure of herself, but the fire inside her had never really gone out.

She glanced over at Yvonne. “Never thought I’d see a mother encourage her own daughter to be the other woman. Maybe that’s just who you are, Mrs. Curtis. Too bad your daughter still doesn’t have what it takes. What a waste of a pretty face.”

“Felicia, that’s enough,” Tatiana snapped, her anger barely contained.

Felicia met her eyes, calm and unbothered. “You really are something, Mrs. Hawthorne. But no matter how much you hate it, you’ll just have to live with it. Your son treats you like this and you still try to understand him. Honestly, I feel bad for you. If my son ever acted like that, I’d cut him off without a second thought.”

Max finally spoke up. “That’s enough.”

Felicia turned to him.

“We should head back. Anne will be waking up soon.”

Felicia let out a mocking smile and turned to Andrea, whose eyes were full of hate. Felicia didn’t miss a beat. “You really are useless. You think being pretty means you can get whatever you want and make men fall at your feet.”

With that, Felicia walked out of the hospital room.

Max looked over at his mother. “Mom, you should just go home for today.”

Tatiana was so angry she could hardly breathe. She opened her mouth to say something, but Max walked away before she could get a word out.

“Max!” Andrea called after him, but the effort made her chest ache, and her face twisted in pain. Tears spilled down her cheeks, making her look even more fragile.

Yvonne hurried to her side. “Andrea, don’t move, okay?”

Max gave Andrea a quick glance, his tone flat. “Get some rest.”

He left the room.

By the time he reached the elevator, Felicia was already on her way down.

When Max got to the lobby, he ran into Darin, who was standing near the doors, looking out. As soon as he saw Max, he seemed to get the picture.

“How’s Andrea?” Darin asked.

They headed to the mall. Felicia didn’t even bother trying things on. She just pointed out what she wanted, and the sales assistant packed it up.

Max paid and carried all the bags.

Wherever they went, people stared. A tall, ridiculously handsome man loaded up with shopping bags, following a beautiful woman who looked like she belonged in a magazine. They gave off that unmistakable vibe of wealth and power. Max looked like the perfect, loving husband, but Felicia’s face was distant, her expression cold, not the least bit happy or spoiled. People watched, envious, wondering how even a man like that had to deal with a woman’s icy attitude.

When they passed a jewelry store, Max led her inside and picked out a few sets of pearl jewelry.

Felicia didn’t bother saying no.

Before leaving, they stopped at a bakery and bought two cakes.

It was all quick and efficient. They didn’t waste any time.

“So, the family estate on the first, then your place on the second?” Max asked.
