“I’ll take Anne home myself,” Felicia said.
Max nodded, keeping his voice calm and gentle. “Alright. I’ll have some gifts ready for you to bring along.”
Felicia didn’t answer. Instead, she suddenly said, “I don’t want to see Marian and Amaris here anymore.”
“If you don’t want to see them, I’ll have them sent back to the old house,” Max replied. “I can arrange for two new housekeepers.”
“I’ll hire my own,” she cut in.
He glanced at her, a faint smile on his lips. “Alright. Whatever you prefer.”
News traveled fast. When Marian and Amaris heard that Max was sending them back to the main house, their first instinct was to blame Felicia. They just couldn’t believe he was actually listening to her. After all the time they’d spent taking care of him, after getting used to the respect from everyone here, how could there be no place for them now? Returning to the old house after all these years meant losing everything they’d established.
But Max didn’t give them a chance to argue. “I’ll let my grandmother know and she’ll make arrangements for you. Go pack up. The driver will take you.”
They knew him well enough to realize that pushing back wouldn’t help. Stubbornness would only make him angry. They glanced resentfully at Felicia, who sat quietly to the side, then left to gather their things.
Meanwhile, staff from the department store delivered the day’s big purchases. Max had them put everything away and told them to wake Anne in twenty minutes and bring her to Felicia’s room. Anne had actually woken up earlier but had drifted right back to sleep.
Max picked up a jewelry box from the coffee table. Inside was a strand of Australian South Sea pearls, each one smooth and silky, glimmering with an elegant shine that spoke of luxury and romance.
He lifted the necklace and looked at Felicia. “Try it on.”
He walked behind her and fastened the necklace around her neck. The deep blue of her turtleneck made the creamy pearls stand out, creating a gentle but striking look.
“A person has to pay for what they’ve done,” he said softly. “So I’m doing everything to make things right now.”
Felicia pulled her hand away and looked off to the side. “You really are so confident, Max. You act like you can afford any price.”
He just smiled, almost to himself. “There are some prices I can’t pay, no matter what.”
Felicia stared at him, searching his face.
“All I want now,” Max said quietly, “is for you and Anne to be happy. That’s all.”
The way he said it, like he truly cared about his wife, caught Felicia off guard. She hadn’t expected it at all.
