After dinner, Felicia headed straight to her room for a shower.
Max went to his own room for a bit, but when he walked in later, he found Felicia sitting on the edge of the bed, smoothing scented oil over her arms and shoulders. The curve of her back was soft and graceful, her skin catching the light in a way that made it look almost luminous.
He couldn’t help but stare for a moment, then walked over and asked, “Want me to help with your back?”
Felicia glanced up, her eyes sharp but amused. “You’re awfully relaxed for someone who’s been begging me to move back in.”
Max grinned. “I’m just happy to be useful.”
She handed over the bottle. “Keep your hands where they belong.”
He took it, voice low. “I wouldn’t dare try anything. It’s enough you agreed to come back. I know better than to push my luck.”
Felicia snorted. “You say that like you’re hopelessly in love with me.”
He only smiled, that familiar little curve to his lips.
Felicia lay down on her stomach, pulling the comforter up over her waist. Max sat beside her, warmed some oil between his palms, and started at her shoulders, working his way slowly down her neck and along her back.
A pink scar, long and unmistakable, stood out against her otherwise flawless skin. Max’s hand hesitated.
“How’d you get this?” he asked quietly.
Felicia’s voice was flat. “It’s nothing.”
She clearly didn’t want to talk about it. Max let it go, focusing instead on gently rubbing the oil into her skin, kneading the tension from her shoulders and neck.
Felicia closed her eyes and went completely still, her breathing soft and even. The bedroom was peaceful, the only sound the quiet whisper of his hands moving over her skin.
After a while, Max pulled the covers up to her shoulders. She didn’t move at all, just lay there quietly, her face turned to the side. He watched her for a long moment, taking in the calm, almost fragile look of her as she slept.
His words hung in the quiet, thick with hope.
Felicia listened, but there was no warmth in her eyes.
Max didn’t push for more. He simply held her all night, not crossing any lines. Around four in the morning, he slipped out of bed, took a cold shower, and went to the gym.
Felicia woke at six, propped herself up in bed, and started catching up on the news on her phone.
Max came back in and saw she was awake. “It’s still dark out. Couldn’t sleep?”
She shook her head. “No, I couldn’t.”
He sat on the edge of the bed, close but careful. “Your holiday starts tomorrow. Want to take Anne to Australia for a few days? We can come back before the holiday. She always want to see the kangaroos, and it’ll be warmer there. It’s supposed to get even colder here.”
