Once Felicia settled into the car, her phone buzzed with a new message from Jeremy.

She unlocked the screen and read, “Go have fun with Heather. Don’t worry about a thing.”

Felicia smiled to herself and typed back, “Alright. You get some rest and take care of yourself too.”

Two days later, Max’s vacation officially started.

He brought Felicia and Anne out to the Folker family estate. Wyatt and Daniel were already there when they arrived.

Out in the parking lot, two voices shouted across the cars.

“Anne!”

Randy and Paul dashed over, waving excitedly. When they caught sight of Max and Felicia, they called out, “Uncle Max! Aunt Felicia!”

Max had introduced everyone at the Hawthorne family dinner not long ago. Anne had made sure to introduce her mom to Paul and Randy then, even though the boys were a little puzzled about why Anne’s mom had suddenly appeared in her life. Still, since Anne clearly adored her mom, the boys decided they would too.

At first, they’d thought Aunt Felicia seemed kind of distant, since she never joined the great-grandparents in conversation. But it hadn’t taken long for them to realize how gentle she really was. Plus, she’d given them both gifts at the dinner.

Felicia still felt a little awkward hearing herself called Aunt Felicia, but with these two sweet boys, she couldn’t feel anything but warmth.

And since Anne liked them so much, it was impossible not to like them as well.

“Hi, you two.” Felicia crouched down a little, her smile soft and kind. There was something so gentle in her eyes, and Paul and Randy immediately relaxed around her.

Paul grinned up at her. “Aunt Felicia, you look really pretty today. You’re the prettiest lady I’ve ever seen.”

Anne puffed up with pride. “Of course my mom is the prettiest.”

Paul nodded seriously. “That’s why Anne is pretty too. It’s all because of Aunt Felicia.”

Felicia couldn’t help but laugh at their conversation. It was obvious Paul’s compliments had made Anne’s day. For someone so little, he sure knew how to say the right things.
