The Ugly Wife’s Stunning Comeback (Felicia and Max) novel Chapter 860

Now that someone had stepped forward to mediate, Hank naturally had no objections. Darin had already met with the top executives in Northwick. He wasn't the one in a hurry anyway. His stance was crystal clear. As long as Hank could present a satisfactory resolution, Darin would call off the siege. For now, they were locked in a tense stalemate.

The entire Curtis family was currently enveloped in a suffocating, high-strung atmosphere. Collin had been forced to cut his overseas recuperation short and return to Northwick to manage the crisis. On the day of his return, Andrea fell severely ill and was currently hospitalized. Her mental state was exceptionally fragile. Yvonne stayed by her side every day, her own mood thoroughly ruined, even going so far as to have a massive, explosive argument with Hank.

That evening, Felicia ate dinner alone at Oakridge Estate.

Max had accompanied Anne to the main Hawthorne estate for a family dinner. Every member of the Hawthorne family had returned to the main house that day. The primary reason was Brysen's rapidly deteriorating health. The doctors had concluded that the old man's body could hold out for a year at most.

Because of this, the evening's dinner lacked its usual warmth and harmony, replaced instead by an unusually heavy and somber atmosphere.

Anne looked at her frail great-grandfather, well aware that he was gravely ill. Her heart ached terribly. She grasped Brysen's bony, withered hand, her voice thick with tears. "Great-Grandpa, you have to get better soon so you can play with me."

Brysen weakly patted Anne's hand. His cloudy eyes, though drained of vitality, still looked at her with boundless affection. He did his best to squeeze her small hand in return. "I will get better, and then I'll play with you."

Anne nodded, her eyes red and brimming with tears.

The surrounding family members watched in complete silence. Some couldn't hold back their own tears and turned their heads away.

After dinner, Max and Luke stepped aside to talk privately.

"How have things been between you two lately?" Max asked.

Max looked down at his daughter, his gaze softening with affection. "If you don't want to go to Cloudville, you can tell Mommy."

Anne looked up at him with wide, tear-rimmed eyes. "Will Mommy be mad?"

Max smiled warmly. "Mommy will never be mad at you. She loves you more than anything in the world."

Anne bowed her head again. She knew her mother loved her the most, but she suddenly had no idea how to bring this up to her. Max held her close, offering quiet words of comfort.

Back at the villa, Felicia had been sitting in the living room watching television. By the time Max and Anne returned, it was already nine o'clock. Normally, Anne would run in and excitedly call out for her mother the second she walked through the door. Felicia immediately noticed the change. She stood up and walked toward the entrance, only to see Max carrying Anne inside, the little girl resting listlessly against his shoulder.
