Felicia was completely absorbed in the game on her phone. She didn't even notice Max coming down the stairs until Marian spoke up, her voice cutting through Felicia's focus. “Sir, are you heading out?”

Felicia looked up just in time to see Max. At this hour, there was really only one person he’d be in such a rush to see. Andrea. She dropped her gaze back to her screen and pretended not to care.

Max drove straight to Andrea’s place. She was already waiting for him outside. The moment his car pulled up, she opened the door and slipped into the passenger seat. They sat together in silence for a few minutes before heading inside.

When they walked into the living room, Yvonne looked up, clearly surprised. “Max? What are you doing here?”

“Sorry for dropping by so late,” Max said. “I’m here to see Darin.”

Yvonne nodded. “Thank you for coming all this way.”

Andrea led Max upstairs.

Max went into Darin’s room. The smell of alcohol hit him as soon as he opened the door. Darin was slouched on the couch, rubbing his temples, his pocket watch dangling from his fingers.

“What brings you here?” Darin asked, sounding tired.

Max sat down across from him. “What happened?”

Darin took another drink, clearly not eager to talk. “It’s nothing.”

Max watched him closely. “This is about your sister, isn’t it?”

Darin’s grip tightened around his glass. For a long moment, he didn’t say anything. Then finally, he spoke. “I need a favor.”

Max waited, letting him take his time.

“What is it?”

Felicia had no idea if Max came back that night, and honestly, she didn’t care. When she got up the next morning, he was already gone.

Two days later, Felicia had a check-up. The doctor told her she’d be transferred to the hospital in three days so they could be ready for the baby. The doctor updated Max, and the hospital was prepared for anything.
