The person behind the leak thought he could finally destroy Max’s reputation, but things spun out in a way nobody saw coming. By the time BlueMarble Investments got their PR team on the case, the moment to fight back had already slipped away. Now the guy was hiding out overseas. The detective who took the photos was already at the police station. He’d snapped a bunch of shots of Max with Andrea, and even got some of Felicia. Clearly, this detective knew what he was doing.

Max’s phone buzzed again. Darin was calling, asking about last night’s news that exploded online. The story hadn’t hurt Andrea or Max at all. Instead, Felicia, Max’s wife, ended up being the one everyone was attacking.

“We’ve found the guy,” Max said. “It’s Josh from Rivergate Engineering.”

“That’s good,” Darin replied. “But I don’t think you can keep your marriage a secret any longer.”

What started out as people piling on for fun had turned into a mess nobody could control. If BlueMarble Investments announced Max wasn’t married, it would just make things worse, spark more rumors, and set off another round of chaos. The smartest move now was to say nothing, let things cool off, and wait for people to lose interest. In the end, Felicia was left to deal with all the hate, even though she’d done nothing wrong.

“If you’re worried about Andrea, you really don’t have to be,” Max said.

Darin sighed, sounding frustrated. “Max, your wife is pregnant with your child. You don’t have to be so heartless.”

“Maybe I’m just not as sentimental as you,” Max replied.

Darin went quiet for a second. “Honestly, I wish your thing with Andrea was just a normal relationship. I don’t want her to be seen as the other woman.”

“She’s not the other woman,” Max said, his voice firm. Once he decided on something, it was almost impossible to change his mind.

Darin shifted the conversation. “Anyway, I’m heading back to Northwick tomorrow. How’s that situation I asked you to handle?”

After the call ended, Max leaned back in his chair, his expression impossible to read. He sat there for a while, lost in thought, then finally picked up his phone and made another call.

The house doctor answered. “Mr. Hawthorne.”

“What happened last night?” Max asked.

The doctor’s voice was calm. “Mrs. Hawthorne has been having trouble sleeping lately. She must have been upset by something, which affected the baby. Things are stable for now. We’re keeping a close eye on her and will do everything we can for both her and the baby.”

Max listened to the doctor’s report and didn’t ask anything else.
